And here I was thinking you made AMVs for yourself. You can still make these AMVs, you just can't distribute them.

I probably wasn't going to buy a CD from any of these bands in the first place, but if they come out with something I like, I'm not going to let a silly action like this prevent me from buying it.

I'm sorry, I really didn't mean to upset anyone by my comment. It's just that I see an AMV as being part 'borrowed' music, part 'borrowed' anime so really I just don't believe we should be complaining. If who we 'borrowed' our material from doesn't like what we're doing we should take it down. I agree with that, and that's why I don't really believe you can fully own a copyright to an AMV. Again, I want to say sorry if I upset you and I won't comment any further on this because I really don't care for dramma and that's not want my comment was meant to make.

You haven't upset me; it takes a lot more than that.

I just don't see why it's funny that copyright is that convoluted; it's really part of the reason why copyright is the mess that it is today.

I'm sorry, I just have a really bad sense of humor. It's just my way. I'm an idiot like that. I know copywriting is a serious issue, wanted to be a writer, I really understand. I really shouldn't have been mocking it. It's just my way. Again, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said what I said.

Not to argue, but to further delve into this boycot thing. I would think that a boycot DONE RIGHT can be effective. What I mean is, in this situation, boycot the record labels, not the bands. Don't buy records unless Evanesance (or anybody else that took/takes this kind of action) changes labels. As various ppl have said, the bands hardly get a penny out of that. I beleive that (just boycoting the records) is what ppl mean by boycotting. Yes, it would be BETTER to write your senator about it, but there is no best way. Be it written or boycotting you still put a chink into the armor of overextensive laws and again I like Phades suggestion, it is deffiniteley BETTER but I would NOT stop ppl from keeping their money from where they think it belongs. One thing I did learn was those who take the low road of boycotting shouldn't (have to) boycot the artists concerts along with their records/ videos if you want to go to it, go to it -_-. I've found that those that take the passive aggressive approach (boycotting) don't generally want their voices heard anyway. They just want the last laugh.

Also as a personal interest ;p my former draft of letters were not stuff I would EVER do anyway, I'm a passive, be it VERY LAZY, type, I just wanted to put that suggestion out there (mostly just the suggestion to BE POLITE and compliment even if you don't make videos of the type) and am VERY satisfied with the explanation of what to avoid and why it may be a bad idea.

Well, unfortunately for them, those bands are on my "Will not purchase another album from them" list -- This list seems to really be growing over the last few years.

And by the way, the fan of those videos didn't contact the AMV creator and say, "You are awesome. I want to give you all sorts of money and never give these bands any money again.". He contacted the band -- That's odd. A free video led to a fan having more interest in a band. In marketing the one fan contact, regardless of the reason, far outways the 1000 anonymous, never going to contact you and show any interest in your band, downloads a video might have? They should be glad the video is sending people to them...even if they have to say, "No. We didn't do that...but don't you love our music?"

Amazing.

Arigatomina wrote:As one of the 'boycotters,' I just want to state that my only reason for listening to 'new' music is for amv-making/watching. I'm not about to go telling other people to avoid certain artists. I'm simply not going to go out of my way to listen to their work, because any music I listen to has a chance of being used in an amv. They don't want that and I don't want that, so it's best all around for me to avoid them entirely. If Remedy or one of Creed's songs happens to play on 97.1 (they'd never play Evanescence) I'm not going to change the station. I just won't go looking for the cd so I can use the songs in an amv. The only reason I buy cds is to use songs for amvs. Why wouldn't I stop buying them for these artists? They asked me to stop. I respect that.
were you ever going to go out of your way to listen to 'crappy' bands like these anyway?? Besides, it's not the BAND'S fault, Phades explanation was that it's the LAW'S fault.

My MO is I am not gonna do anything I wasn't doing before anyway... I didn't buy Evanesance CDs beforehand anyway, I'm not gonna do it now ^.^ I DID however enjoy some interpretation of their songs for the INTERPRETATION not the song- so it's unfortunate that that may stop.

And to the ppl that have the attitude of 'Evanesance, Creed, good riddance!' Know that AMVs are EXPRESSIONS not the songs themselves. When you say 'It doesn't matter, they all sucked anyway!' You aren't insulting the songs, your insulting the creator's expressions. And that makes me ANGRY!

uh.. no, haven't you ever watched a tv drama or sitcom?? The money grubbing lawyer has NO such responcibility to stop the artists from creating money making propertys. This is Democracy.
