NG EVA - platinum collection really worth it?
Hey gang,
well, as Amazon has the NG-EVA platinum collection at just under $50USD, I was wondering if it was really worth buying them again, especially since there are extras that are missing (commentaries are great way to watch the series again with a new angle).
I currently have the original dvd's (plus the last two 'director's cut' dvd versions), and am currently just starting on an EVA AMV, so my question is - is the quality that much better and worth the extra $50? Just curious

That old topic should be helpful to you. I know it isn't about the thinpak specifically, but it has some good info about the remastered footage you might want to take a look at.

At least you didn't buy the tapes, too.Rozard wrote: Man, I'm really depressed by these slim case deals, because I start collecting then when they come out, and I spend more money on three discs than what the entire series costs a year after it's released...

This releasing of thinpak sets could change the market as more people decide to just wait until the sets come out. In the extreme ADV et al could just decide to release entire sets from the start instead of 4-5 ep's at a time.
I also noticed that other anime companies are following along. I picked up US Manga's World of Narue for $30 and the second Patlabor OAV series (16 eps) for $20. Twelve Kingdoms (AnimeWorks) is out in two collections - kind of high at $75 each. These were at Best Buy so they're not the best (!) prices around.
BTW, some of ADVs older series are not in thinpak sets, but still have good prices. Silent Mobius (all 26 eps) goes for $20 and Blue Seed (also 26 eps) runs around $50.

Ditto what tono said in two words. Damn at that price I almost regret living in the greatest country on earth.
Anyway, slim cases are awsome. but what I dont get is why not just put them in one slightly larger than normal case. I got Nip/Tuck season 2 this week. The whole thing (5dvd's. Space to fit one more) in a case thats about 1.7 times the size of a standard dvd case. 16 45 minute eppisodes (so the same as 32 average anime epps). I dont see why anime box sets cant be repackages like this. Its just the most logical way to physicaly store dvd's and have them easily accesible. Its also cheaper than what the packaging on my 10 bulky evangelion dvd's cost. Sure some people want to show off there colection, but for most the extra packaging on the average dvd is a waste of space.

I'd be careful, I own 2 platinum dvds, and to my horror there are some b-frames in them. As a series it's great of course and on the second dvd there is a nice bonus. A total episode (9) as kind of manga video, don't ask me for a more certain describton, it's impossible to tell what it is, but it's funny. Well on amazon.de the newest dvds, must be something between 6 and 8, cost 29.97€. They have a German and a japanese sound-sampel and German and English subtitles. The German translation sucks. Often there are totally different sentences in the versions, plus the emotions aren't expressed like in the original episodes and Asuka's name is pronounced totally wrong. Still I'll get myself the whole series as platinum edition.

I hate it that the complete collections by adv films don't have any of the extras like the seperate releases do.
