The anime style originates from the same place most modern animation does, Mickey Mouse.
Sad as that may be; Mickey Mouse is boring even for kids.
Disney's use of large eyes inspired the creator of Astro Boy. The anime style was then transformed from the Japanese culture.
Anime comes in a variety of styles form DBZ, Utena, Ghost in the Shell, from Shonen to Shojo. So, for an American backed show to look different is not too bad. (Though I do worry censorship standards would alter storylines.)
So the real factor is the cultural influence in the anime.
I saw a friend watching that show Lyoko. It was obvious to me that it was nothing more than a cheap knock-off.
Not just the art style, but story and culture as well. The samurai sword was being worn UPSIDE DOWN. What a bunch a crap to miss that. You would think professional artists would be more observant before making an imitation.
So, I say what makes anime is beyond the art cell into the heart of the culture that writes and designs the story and show.
