In my opinion, AMVs are not legal. To a certain degree.
I use trailer disks to make AMVs, trailers are free and thrown out everywhere. So I do not find my amvs to be illegal. BUT! I rip music from cds...BUT, I own the cds...I actually own multiples of cds.(I lose them, and rebuy them because I can. They're laying around my house somewhere.)
So calling AMV creation and distribution illegal, or legal, is all dependant on how it was created.
Like Marijuana, if given through perscription, it's fine. But bought off the street, it's bad....unless in Europe. (Damn wankers, taking all the good freedom.)
But yeah, from a business sense, I would find no reason why a anime creator would stop the distribution of anime music videos. Not only is it giving free advertising, but it's creating a trend toward their creation.

There's nothing funnier than a bunch of people who know nothing of copyright law talking about copyright law. Carry on good people, I haven't had this much of a laugh since I quit reading slashdot. One tip though, you should all preface your comments with IANAL as if we don't all know that anyway, it adds to the humor factor.
