2001 or 2010 by Arthur C. Clarke?
Maybe something by Isaac Asimov?

Perhaps an unabridged dictionary?

I like a lot of the responses I've got. Almost everybody put in a thoughtful response and I enjoyed reading them. I think there are a lot of good books out there that would make good anime. The first that comes to mind at the moment, although it just came out in live action, would be War of the Worlds. But one that doesn't take place in modern time new york. One that would be close to the book. That would be great. Some other good books would be The Jaquar, Ring of the Five Dragons, and I think Stephen King's Firestarter would be absolutely kick ass as an anime. Keep up the suggestions, I enjoy reading them.

True but if manga could translate to anime I don't see why GN's couldn't. Of course there would have to be some massive story alterations. The average asian would probably not get a lot of the western European references, cultural, literary, religeous, and historic, but none the less the stories are compleling, the characters deep, and the writing broad enough to allow for a decent universal adaptation.

Well, we don't get a lot of the Japanese and east Asian references in anime and we still buy it like crack :)

You're right about the Western European references, and I'd agree with you there that it could work. The strengths of a particular book/series/etc could work in its favour for alteration from one form to another - allowing, as you said "a decent universal adaptation".

There realy wouldn't be much point to adapting the story for a more universal audience. For a lot of books that would completely change the story. There is also the point that European/Western culture is becoming popular in Aisa/Eastern areas, to include Japan. Just like their culture is becoming popular here.

Just look at The Lord of the Rings movies. The have done very weel all over the world and the story is definitly European in origan.

I'd like to see Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy be turned into an anime movie. It's intelligent, irreverant against religion, people, and generally everybody on earth, providing a swift kick in the nuts about what we think we know and our perseption of so much. Then again, never mind... it's already been made under the name of Evangelion.

I'd want to see Dracula made into an anime, and Hellsing doesn't count. And after they made it I'd want to compare it to the 1930's movie starring Bela Lugosi and see if anything matches up :D
