Same here, subtitles can be by far a huge distraction.

Lemme put it into terms that I can relate to.

If Euphoria had subtitles.....it would look crappy, but still be a great video

If Euphoria had no story.....I still don't know the damn story so it would still be good IMO

One of my favorite videos has subtitles in it. The guy had such a great concept that the subtitles didn't bother me at all. I say no story ruins an AMV more.

Depends...

If it's a huge digital effects showcase then the thing that will ruin it is subtitles. Lack of story doesn't matter because most of the time you're in awe that someone made an AMV with all the effects. But from observation of these AMVs through friends that aren't editors...they find the lack of story extremely boring and will only watch these types once, maybe twice anyways.

If the project is a non-jaw-dropping-digital-effects-loaded AMV, then no story will ruin it faster than anything for me. Subtitles -if- used right can add to it in my personal opinion.

Now in both cases the DivX logo = Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad. (Dunno if that counts as "subtitles" or not)

subs ruin an otherwise good video more than lack of story does.

however, a story can improve an otherwise mediocre video more than removing subs can.

Subtitles, and that DivX logo. :x

Also, what bothers me more, if there is no sync to the music, then, that bothers me more.

Some AMV's can be good without a story, or concept. It can be pointless gore, fanservice, action, and it still can be a good AMV. heheh..

But yeah, subtitles, DivX logo, lack of sync to music. FTL.

if the AMV is good enough to make me ignore the subs... then awesome... and they will recieve guides anyways from me.

but either can easily kill an AMV for me...

ALSO: if someone made a well edited AMV I would hope they would put the 2% extra effort into cropping subs as well... and if they dont then they lose points on Effort (if I am leaving an opinion) and will in some way or another get the sub removal guide sent to them from me...

sometimes, though, the "crappy" subtitled AMVs are good use if I'm wanting to check out the story line of the actual anime I havent seen, because I can easily ignore lyrics and read the subs to find out the real story of the anime... AMV can easily skew the actual story on the anime.. and laziness of not cropping subs often "cures" that.

Actually, random, unnecessary subtitles are bad.

There are a few videos where having the subtitles in certain scenes help the story/concept along. Some subtitle the video with a translation of the song. And a few where the whole concept involves the subtitles.

But there are MANY more examples of otherwise good AMVs hurt by using subtitled footage.

well if the subs are part of the concept then, its all good... sunshine lolipops and RRrrrRRr is ovbiously a good example of that :) but I think that it would be safe to assume that they are speaking of random subs left in from fansubs...

though its good of you to bring up such a point...

I have to say what ruins a video, what really REALLY turns it from a mildly unpleasent experience to a horrible unending pain that leaves you curled into a corner and sobbing is neither subtitles or no story. It's having inthesto edit the thing.
