I'd rather watch a well-conceived vid with subtitles any day over a bad one without subs.

No story gets my vote.

But, to clarify,

A concept doesn't have to tell a story, as long as you have some kind of planning throughout the vid. Anything without some kind of concept is almost always crap.
Yeah, the AMV thesis....that was me.

Well both suck, but still subs are more distracting (as long as the creator didn't build his own ones  ).

1) Stupid random scenes that make no sence at all to anything
2) Subtitles
3) Sloppy Footage (P2P)
4) Overuse of effects
5) Songs I don't like.. but that more personal

Subtitles get my vote too.
I saw a lot of good vids without story... Most important thing for me is that the mood of the music stick well to the mood of the images, as QuietCannon said.

Like some others have already mentioned, not having a concept would ruin a video more than subtitles would, in my opinion. It's possible to have a good video with subtitles, but they become more of an annoyance and hack away at the viewing experience as a whole.

Obsessively trying to pin down what ruins AMVs ruins AMVs.
I have no idea how to use this new forum.

Which of the two ruins the amv? subtitled footage or no story(random scenes)?
By "ruins the amv", I am assuming that the amv would have been good if it didn't contain one of the two evils you mention.
...There's no need for story in amvs as long as there's a theme or just good beat syncing.
So, story = concept? If so...

I would choose story.
"Fansubs", though they are an eyesore and the editor will be seen as lazy/cheap/noob, if the video's concept holds, the video will be tolerable.
