English Dubbed Naruto

Post by MA-121 » Sat Jan 14, 2006 11:24 pm

Is there anyone out there that likes or is even OK with the dubbed version. OK I will admit that the VA is a little spotty in parts, but they usually get it right where it counts. Plus, most dubbs start out a like this, but gradually get better as the series goes on cuase the voice actors get more in tuned with the characters they're voicing for. My thoughts though is that the sounds of the characters voices are pretty close to how they sounded in my head when I was reading it. So I'm pretty cool with it.

That would be a scary thought :( Anyway, I do like the english dub though some voices can irritate me at times.

I can't stand the voice of Naruto. I'm going to stick to the original, non-dubbed version. When they do eventually release the show on DVD, I pray they have both versions on it.

I can't stand the dub. But seeing that its was done by VIZ to be shown on Cartoon Network, this was to be expected.

I think the dub is good. Naruto's voice needed some getting used to, but I am ok with it now.

......... I am still trying to get over "one piece" though...... Sanji's voice has to be the worst dub ever..... Then it's Luffy in a close second place....

*shudders* :x

I just wish that Adult swim shows it so that they can be able to curse like i know they originally did. Naruto's voice is some-what ok, but its nothing bad in my point of view.

That's just the fansubbers tring to make the series sound cooler to an audience that thinks bad language = 'more adult'. Naruto is marketed towards the same demographic in the US as it is in Japan; 10-12 boys. The only diferences are the cultural ones that dictate what's okay for "children's programing" in each country.

Some Naruto fans (well at least those that are actually over the age of 12  ), think the series is "more mature" than it's target audience. That may be true from the viewpoint of differing cultural values and media practices, but the fact remains that it wouldn't sell to an older audience nearly as well as it's target audience. The liscensing of the show was done for (IIRC) a tremendous price. The only way to make a return on that investment is to market like crazy to a demographic with high tendencies towards fad-buying and obsessive fandom... i.e. the same age demographic that made the series a hit in Japan. They have the fanbase from the fansubbers already, what makes you think they have to actually work to keep that up? Those people are already in the bag -- the new market (the intended market) is their main focus. The Liscensing of popular series for domestic rebroadcast is always about money and it always will be about money. It's high time people realized that.

Also, what makes you think the Japanese seiyu don't sound as corney to the average Japanese speaker as the VA's for the dub do? I mean, it is aimed towards young boys...
