I'm taking this opportunity to post something I've recently read in the New York Times, as well as pimp one of my favorite Anime shows.

I'd say go with Fullmetal Alchemist. Albeit it is being shown on Cartoon Network currently, get it for the ease and pleasure of being able to view it whenever. That, and this is quoted from the NYT itself:
In a recent viewer poll conducted by the Japanese network TV Asahi, [Hagane no Renkinjutsushi (Fullmetal Alchmist)] was voted the best anime of all time.

whoops... never put FMA right next to FMP; it's too confusing.

Kino's Journey is a great series if you don't mind slower, relfective anime.

You might want to give Le Portrait de Petite Cossette a try. It's got a great creepy/mysterious feel to it, and there's some good action, too. It's a three episode OAV, and Geneon released it all on one disc. Did I mention the fact that the animation is absolutely gorgeous!?

If you want to get an idea of the series, I have a Petite Cossette AMV. It's the one in my sig. Beware of spoilers, though.
