The jokes come so fast and furious that many times they will go right over your head. The option allows you to see little bubbles like what you would see on VH1's Pop up video.

Excel Saga was first shown in Japan in 1999. All of the pop culture, Japanese, and anime references come from before then. And it spoofs everything... from Evangelion, robot shows, Fists of the Northern Stars, Star Wars, American Cartoons, hentai, teen dramas, Captain Harlock, sports anime, Power Rangers... it is pretty merciless at times... :P
Since the release of the box set, you can find the individual volumes pretty cheap at the right places.

Some of the episodes will leave you scratching your head, but you gotta hand it to a series that has the gall to have the japanese voice actress for Excel parody herself in a Sailor Moon parody.

Also, the original english voice actress damaged her vocal chords halfway through and was replaced by a slightly less annoying voice actress. To this day, if I ever hear the DNA^2 dub, I have flashbacks of Excel Saga. (I only listen to english dubs for comparisons sake, subtitled is my preference.)

Though Puni Puni Poemi goes more into depth on the hentai parodies. If you happen to like Excel, visit Puni Puni Poemi for even more nonsenseical action.

Excel Saga is a krazy, krazy series. I would definitely put the money down to get it (if I had the money). Like some other have suggested, if you're interested, try picking up the first DVD somewhere cheap.

Less annoying? I personalyy liked the origanal voice a hell of a lot better, it was even kind of sexy :P , but that's just me. With the newer voice I actually looked forward to the scenes with out her speaking.

But I do have to give it credit for being one of the best parady anime out there.

Excel Saga is not for everyone, I'll say that.

I own the series and ADORE it.

It's original, wacky, odd, and very...VERY amusing. <33

Some people might not be in to the humor, though, so...if you've seen at least clips from it and enjoy them...or pictures and/or quotes or...SOMETHING...then, sure, go for it. :)
