There is no right answer to your questions. Any anime or song is good for a good for a first AMV. What I suggest is listen to the music you have and see if any of the songs remind you of a certain character from a show that you are familiar with. Next, listen to the song as many times as you need to and try to place the lyrics with scenes that you are fairly certain would work and jot them down on paper. This can be a hasstle but in can be handy for some people. Personally I have never done that but that is just me. Once you have an idea about how you want your video to go rip the required footage and import it into your vid program. The available guides can help you out quite a bit with this part.
One suggestion I have is to not just throw random clips together in a few hours and say that you are done. I know that some people make awesome videos really quickly but since this is your first vid I would suggest that you take your time. Also subtitles should be avoided if possible.
Hope that this helps you out

First of all: Use quality material. Properly compressed DVD footage and lossless audio can only improve your vid. also: don't use footage with subs (especialy if it's karaoke for the ops/eds) it looks horrible and it distracts the viewer from the vid itself.
Regarding music: your choice of music should reflect what you want to express with the AMV. If you want to create an awe-inspiring action video, use an awe-inspiring song.
As Gallup wrote, lyrics that match the message of the amv can be very usefull but in my oppinion it isn't a must.
Usually you use the entire song for the AMV but i have seen some good videos only using partial songs. Ofcourse: Long song = long video = alot of work.
Regarding anime: That's your preferance and your preferance alone. What you're looking for is a song and an anime which share themes. The themes may be in the events that occur in the anime which corrosponds to the lyrics of the song or it might be the atmospheres which overlap.
It's common to try and make a tribute to the anime used by "recapping" the story (or some of it) in the AMV. I'd recommend you try this since it's pretty easy and you get some practise with editing, managing video-data and budgeting your time.
If it's an anime i've seen i'd be happy to give you an oppinion on the AMV once it's done.

I'd have to say that for your first one, don't expect too much. GDProductions pointed out some good advice, but for your first one, I'd have to say not to worry too much about a lot of things. I'd suggest using an anime you're very familiar with, perhaps one you've seen all the way through at least once. That'll cut down your time finding clips. Shoot for a song in the 2-3 minute range. It'll make it a little more manageable and you won't need to spend as much time until you have a finished product. Despote what a lot of peopel here will say, you can get by with sub-par quality footage. A lot of the experienced AMVers put extra effort into their videos to get the extra high quality. Lastly, don't bother too much with special effects. An amv made of a simple series of clips is just fine. Adding extra effects will slow down your encoding times.
Most importantly, do whatever the hell you want. Especially since it's your first one, you should just be concerned with your own self enjoyment. Just because people give you advice, don't take them as rules. One thing I've heard of too much is people starting a project and losing interest when it takes too long. After you finish your first one, you'll most definately see things you could have done differently and you'll learn a lot for your next AMV. If you get too bogged down in details, you might never finish. Subsequently, you may never even try to make an AMV again. One finished crappy AMV is better than a few scattered cool clips set to music.
Good luck.

This is a painlessly short sig.

Lord Itachi, you're quite clearly not trying to help here.
As qazyseult wrote "do whatever the hell you want". This is important. Don't make AMV's for animes you havn't seen because some guy wants to see some AMV's with those animes.
Personly i'm not making vids for anyone besides myself. I figure most people see it the same way as i do. I make something i like and if it happens to be what other people like then that even better.
Yeah, i may have put a little more weight on the quality of the video footage than i should have. It's true that some of the videos i cherish the most doesn't exactly have dvd quality footage.
