Anime and the Seven Deadly Sins

Post by EmilLang1000 » Mon Jan 30, 2006 2:10 am

Something has come to my attention recently: in many Tragedy-style Animes, and in Anime in general, several main or key characters from the same show often embody one of the Seven Deadly Sins. I'd like to see people's take on this, and what characters they think from what shows fit this model. Here one of my own observences:

Naruto

Pride - Naruto
Naruto lives to prove himself. Anyone who mocks him often ends up on the wrong side of fist. A perfect example of Naruto's obsession over his own success is shown early on, when he stabs his own hand to bleed out the poison he'd been infected with, just so he didn't feel like he needed to use others as a crutch

Envy - Rock Lee
Let's face it - Fuzzy Eyebrows wants to beat Naruto; in many ways, especially with his "rivalry," Lee is envious of Naruto's strength and friendship with Sakura; his entire goal in life is to gain what Naruto has.

Gluttony - Chouji
It's Chouji... need I say more? For the sake of argument, when have you seen him outside of a fight NOT stuffing his face or complaining about being hungry.

Lust - Sakura
Sakura, though she's convinced she's in love with Sasuke, is more infatuated with him than actually in love with him. Looking to the comics moreso than the Anime, this can be seen in the later years; by then, Sakura still wants to get Sasuke back, but it seems that her girlish obsession with him has disipated; and if it hasn't, one must realize that she's obssessed with the idealized image of someone she knew long ago, rather than a real person.

Wrath - Sasuke / Gaara
Gaara's only driving force, when we first encounter him, is to kill, quickly, efficiently, and without mercy. Sasuke, likewise, used his obsession for revenge as the one thing to keep him constantly going. Very sunny characters, those who use "I have to kill a certain someone" as a morality booster.

Greed - Orochimaru
Greed takes many forms; in Orochimaru's case, it's greed in the form of lust for power. Orochimaru has, many times, said he wishes to take Konohagakure for himself.

Sloth - Shikamaru
How many times have we heard "it's so bothersome" from Shikamaru? Or how many times has he been called a "lazy ninja?" 'Nuff said.

Let's see what you guys can come up with. The only rules I have are this:

1. Please list at least 5 of the sins; not EVERY show has characters who fit all seven, but I'd like to see people make an attempt at this - no listing only one sin, because that's just silly.

2. Please give reasons as to why you think the characters are the archetypes for the sin to which you assign them.

3. It's inevitable that people will repeat shows, but if you do, please try to apply different characters to the sins, even if that means using the same characters as someone else but assigned to different sins. Still give reasons for each.

4. If you agree with someone 's post mostly, but disagree with them in several examples (3 or less of the sins), simply quote them, then list your own example of that sin (example: Malificus says X from (blank) is Wrath, and gives reasons; Merm agrees with Malificus on all but Wrath, quotes Malificus, and says Y is a better example for Wrath, giving his reasons for his opinion). This is the most important, as it will create discussions concerning the characters' personas, archetypes, and roles.

5. No Homonculae from Fullmetal Alchemist; I'm not against people using FMA, in fact that show is full of complex characters who fit many sins, but when characters are supposed to be the incarnation of their namesake, it's cheating to use them.

What if you used the homunculae as sins, just not the one they're named after?

Just as an example:

Greed- Lust
She places all of her recources towards getting what she wants, not worrying about the costs, just giving everything she has to get a soul and become human.

Would something like that work?

If you can figure out a way, go right ahead; I did realize that Envy is more wrathful then, well, Wrath, so I suppose that works.

M'kay, then how about some Yakitate! Japan?

Pride - Pierrot Bolneze likes to show off (well, I suppose that comes with being a world-level clown :P ), and even though most of his boasts are legitimate, there were situations where his bragging almost got him (and others) killed.

Lust - Kinoshita, the oft-forgotten primary work force of Pantasia's Southern Tokyo branch only works there because he's hot for Tsukino. In fact, Tsukino often uses this to get him to do more work or other stuff he doesn't want to do.

Gluttony - Ryou Kuroyanagi, one of Pantasia's best bread judges (and the character with the best reactions), gets incredibly upset when someone else takes over judging, because it means he won't get to eat the delicious bread made by the contestants.

Envy - Kawachi is often jealous of the abilities of other bakers, especially Azuma. His jealousy even led to him sabotaging Azuma's bread early in the series.

Sloth - Matsushiro, the Southern Tokyo branch's manager, rarely does anything but hang out in the break room while at the store, leaving Kinoshita to do all of the work.

Wrath - Suwabara is well-known for his Wrathfulness; one good example is after he gets beaten by Azuma and ends up chopping up the dojo in a rage.

Greed - As much as I was wanting to stick with only "good guys" for this, I couldn't think of any to fit with Greed, so I had to go with the eldest of the Azusagawa sisters, Yukino.
Yakitate Spoiler wrote:Not only is she trying to prevent Tsukino from getting any of their father's inheritance, she also helped the owner of Pantasia's rival bakery, St. Pierre, to take over Pantasia so she could get more money.

Hmm i bet you could do this well.

Cowboy Bebop

Pride - Jet (Though he is calm, he does put a lot of emphasis on his police training and how he's the master at all things.)

Lust - Faye (Lets face it. The women flaunts all her assets to get what she wants.)

Sloth - Spike (He's a lazy son of a gun. Wont do much if it requires to much work)

Gluttony - Ed (Yep, the little tike loves to eat anything and everything. She also seems to be constantly hungry for anything that resembles food.)

Envy - Julia (She wants to have a better life at almost any cost)

Wrath - Vicious (He's the person who really falls under this category. Always wanting spike and julia dead, he is quick to temper.)

Greed - All the bounties. (You'll notice that with each bounty the person just wants money by doing some task at any cost)

FLCL Version:

Greed: Haruko
Wants the power of the Pirate King, willing to take down anyone in her way and use any means to coerce/force people into doing what she wants.

Envy: Amarao
Jealous of Naota's relationship with Haruko. While he does resent her on the outside (probably due to a relationship with her akin to Naota's which turned out bad), he does still wish she loved him instead.

Lust: Mamimi
She doesn't cause lust like Faye or Lust, but she does possess it. When Tasuku (Naota's brother who Mamimi hgad a crush on) is gone to America, she expresses all of her pent up sexual energy on Naota, or whatever else is habndy that she can control.

Sloth: Shigekuni
Face it, Naota's grandfather is so old that even sleeping is a chore for him.

Gluttony: Atomsk
He consumes star systems. At that point, there must be something more than just the reputation as the Pirate King causing it. Atomsk might not consume it all as food, but he does have the ability to consume entire solar systems, which he uses.

Pride: Nionamori
She has herself in such high regard, she uses her status as class president to bring more attention to herself, albiet, this was so her parents could watch her in a play, but she still sees herself as a figure so abovew everyone else that sshe can break the rules, and that she can order them around.

Wrath: Medical Mechanica
Medical Mechanica wants to eliminate thought, "smoothing out the wrinkles," and they use any resource they can, even going as far as to capture the Pirate King and harness his N.O. to further their goals of eliminating thought.

Hmmm...starting to see one of these for the Titans from Zeta Gundam:

-Wrath - Yazan Gable - This man is a textbook thrill-killer. Seriously. Fighting is what drives him, it's what he lives for. To this end, he's also not above killing people on his own side if he deems it necessary
Spoiler wrote:One of his key scenes in the series comes when his has superior officer, Jamaican killed off (in what looks to be an accident) simply because he grew fed up with the man's tactics.
-Greed - Jamitov Hymam - As the leader of the Titans, at first one thinks the man is basically just a bigot with a grudge against spacenoids. But with another look, one sees it's not about Earth vs Space at all to him as it is power and his want of more of it. (Using the Titans to hunt down rogue Zeon groups just gave them a full carte blanche in the eyes of the EF to rule over both the other Feddies as well as the spacenoids.) That's part of why he sought an alliance with Axis. He didn't care that they were Zeon reborn, he thought their influence would help him reconsolidate and rebuild his power.

Lust -
Spoiler wrote: Reccoa Lond - She tries to rationalize her defection from the AEUG as saying it's thinking like a woman and whatnot, but it all boils down to one thing in the end. She didn't feel Char was treating her like she felt he should and thought that Paptimus would do so. Not the most direct form of lust, but to an extent, it fits.
Pride - Paptimus Scirocco
Simply put, the man's a puppet master. He believes he can control the universe in almost every regard and manipulates people whenever he can.
Spoiler wrote: Ironically, it's his continued believe that he's completely on top of the situation that winds up shafting him in the end. By the time he finally sees fully the threat that Camille and the Zeta pose to him, it's too late, and he's unable to escape, dying impaled on the front of Zeta's wave rider.
-Envy - Jerid Mesa - His entire involvement in the Gryps war (that we see anyways) begins when he's first bested by Camille during the theft of the Mk-IIs. From there, he's subjected to numerous defeats, and loses many of his comrades, trying simply to defeat Camille. By the end of the war, this vendetta leaves him with nothing left to lose (having lost much of his position, his friends, and even the woman he loved) and all he has left to live for is killing Camille once and for all.

...still trying to find good matches for Gluttony and Sloth (in a faction like the Titans these could be tricky)
...but, you did say 5 out of 7 was allright
