The biggest Amv Maker decision

This is probably the biggest decision an Amv Maker have to do.
As you probably know, I lost my computer, but since on Summer it will be my 18th birthday,
I'll probably be able to get a new "top-level" system.
Now, the biggest question I could ever make is.. A Computer or a Macintosh?

My decision would go on the Computer, without doubts. This because:
- I use it since I was a child
- With it you can so softwares like AmvApp and codecs like FFDShow
- The world mainly live around Windows computers.
But there are bad points, like:
- Crtl+Alt+Del fever. = Continous Crashing. (Antivirus is a must)
- Working with Drivers and Hardware is painful.
- I should re-buy AE. (:evil:)

But I heard many good comments and info about Macs, like:
- It's the computer borned for the video Editing
- It's the main choice of professionals.
And the bad points in MY case:
- I should start from zero.
- I don't know if there are useful tools like the ones in the App for Mac.
- Conversion, Avisynth, and stuff like that, would be a mystery on a Mac for me, unlike it is on a Computer.

In my opinion, I would go for a Windows OS computer, but I would love to hear what you all think about this. =)

I have both a Mac and a PC at work, and I hands down hate the mac, it's just a frustrating system and I'm not accustomed to it. If you've grown up with a pc and know how it use it reasonably well, then the switch is hard to make.

Also alot of free apps for everything just aren't available for mac. Final Cut Pro is a good program, but that's no reason to get a mac, Premire Pro is comparable.

I would also take price range into account, from what I've heard to good mac will cost you a good deal more than a good pc.

Anyway, unless you're planing on becoming a professional desginer or something of that sort, I suggest just staying with what you know. Since those are the only people I know who really use them.

Honestly ... if you are not going to be a pro .. it really doesn't matter ... I'm a life long mac person ... and If you were going to edit "real" movies for a studio and TV, the mac is what you would want ... for Final Cut Pro (Which I noticed Ron Howard was using to edit The da vinci code) ... But for AMV, stick with what you know I guess is what I'm trying to say. But it Mac's intregue you, I can always help you convert to the dark side ..... lol

Just get whatever you want to use. It'll all work out in the long run. Hell, getting something different is usually rather educational.

I have yet to find an equivalent of VirtualDub for the Mac. (Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places?)

If you're looking for strictly video and photo work, I'd say go Mac. But if you want to do gaming as well, stick with PC.

Worst case if you get a Mac is you can buy Virtual PC and load Windows on it.

I would at least wait until the next version of Windows (Longhorn, Vista, whatever they call it) comes out later this year before you get a new computer.

Don't you mean, the translucent technicolor side? (oh wait, they don't make the multi-colored ones anymore...)

Macs aren't that bad really, take some getting used to if you're not familair with 'em. But for end-users like most of us, PC's hold the high ground concerning apps and the support that goes with them. Especially here on the forums. But there's nothing wrong with trying something new, just best to know what you're getting into.

You'll probably find more AMV applications for the PC than for the Mac, VirtualDub chiefly amongst them.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there isn't a Mac version of the AMVApps package available through the .org guides, is there?

There are some programs for your amv on a mac. There is mactheripper that will create ur vob files...then mpegstreamiline that converts the VOb to Quicktime, and then you can import them into finalcutpro. Both program r free and my buddy uses them on his mac and they work pretty well. I dont know how to use them, but he makes amvs in pretty nice quality, so hope this helps.
