some times it helps to save the movie where your at and then watch it. It gives you an idea ast where your timings are acutally gonna fall after some one downloads it (it will lose few bits) and you also ca sit there and use our judging criteria as a guide, too.

Hrmph. Nothing like actually getting stuck in to teach you a thing or two. I've spent the afternoon struggling with VOBs and VirtualDubMod and all those other good things, and as a result have had my very first revelation. WMM refuses to work with makeAVIs, at least on my useless machine. So I'm going to have to create HuffYUV files. Thus I'm going to have to get immediately selective or I'll have no space at all left on my hard drive. Oh well. Preplanning by necessity...

Depends a lot for me. When I'm editing with movie source, I don't plan a whole lot. With TV series, I have to in order to save hard drive space. Plus, I find that things come out better when I have an overall plan in mind.

well what I do is I listen to the song until I get a general idea on what i want to do, then i memorize the lyrics so i can get a destinct feel on how i want the video to look. From there it just kinda flows

The hosts listed in there are these days not very used at all anymore. The advice is still valid but there are better places to get your stuff hosted and no more of that relatively small space that are given (YouSendIt being the most popular is topping itself at 1GB).

I get the impression that the more experienced you are with editing, the more likely you are to just get into the editing suite and wing it, since you actually can.
Well, that's part of it. Part of it is also style. Some editors take a freestyle approach, taking a concept and nothing else (save source, obviously) to the empty timeline. Others spend hours working out timing charts beforehand, and then and only then do they start editing.

Experience plays some role, but there are well-seasoned editors who plan everything out.
