But as confusing and open to interpretation as the ending is, it's good to hear a number of different views on it, methinks.Episode 26 basically showing what's going on in Shinji's mind during the Human Complementation process (without showing you how they got there -- for that, you'll have to watch End of Evangelion). With his realizations at the end and his newfound resolve to learn to like himself and the world, he rejects Instrumentality, which as far as I can tell restores to the world its sense of individuation and restores the ego barriers between humans.

psst....check the anime discussion thread on about page 3 or 2 or so, there's at least a mamilion pages on it. Yeah, i just finished the series the other day too and am also slightly confused. Many agree that they were all turned into LCL like when shinji was engulfed by his eva. Then through both either his and/or the others, he finds meaning in living a life without evas so he then decides to live on.

actually, the show's ending is confusing because it was basically slapped together at the last moment. This is because they had all but lost funding, and were running on not but fumes. It is supposed to be psychologically taxing, but with cut-corners methods to save money, they couldn't do much else.
When the movie, End of Evangelion came out, it was meant to be what Anno had REALLY wanted the ending to be. That, and he was so sick of people bitching about the show's ending, he made it as visually amazing and psychologically draining as possible, just to shut them up. Everything you expected of Eva came out in the movie, and damned if it doesn't make your head spin the first few times you watch it.
Although the dub isn't the greatest, I suggest watching it if you really want to understand what's going on. It's just better to HEAR what's being said, rather then kill yourself trying to read it in subtitles.

I find it interesting that the Director's Cut next episode preview after episode 24 includes several scenes that actually ended up in End of Evangelion, rather than what episode 25 actually ended up looking like... so it's clear that they had the ideas there to show the action and other fun stuff in the last two episodes, but in the end it didn't even matter.
Plus, the Director's Cut next episode previews after episodes 23 and 24 (any others?) are animated in a much cheaper fashion than the next episode previews on the original release... think of the "scanned storyboard"-style sections of Episode 26. So yeah, it's pretty safe to say that they ran out of money.

that's quite a variation from what i heard.Joe88 wrote:Yea I noticed that too.
You see asuka fighting the units-05 in the prview.
The budget greately reduced after the blood and gore of ep 18.
They were actually going to pull it off the air but instead did the budget thing.
Thats why theres long pauses , such as the elavator scene with rei and asuka.
i only heard this from a friend who lived in japan, but apparently they also had troubles with the japanese public accepting the original ending (of eps 25 and 26). As is made painfully obvious, evangelion does have a very religious slant, and the original ending shot a lot of the religious symbolism down. for that reason the original ending was boycotted and they threw together a piece of junk ending to fill in the gaps. i realise there's about 20 holes in that theory, but i'm only saying what i heard.
as for the running out of money; then how could they have knocked up the funds for the last episodes, the movies, the directors cut disks, and now the re-animated platinum release? surely they didn't make enough off the last few episodes to cover that little shopping list.

Because NGE was one of the biggest series of the decade, and they made tons of money off VHS/DVD sales and merchandising. They didn't make the movies until years after the series's original run wrapped up; they didn't do it until they did have the funding for it.Kadaj wrote:as for the running out of money; then how could they have knocked up the funds for the last episodes, the movies, the directors cut disks, and now the re-animated platinum release? surely they didn't make enough off the last few episodes to cover that little shopping list.
