I look that someone used scenes from an anime to act out the music or portray their fav character in a new and unknown light. Though I have a couple of IY vids, I prefer the old-school anime before CG finishing as they are interlaced and tricky to work with. I also would like to see more people use REAL METAL and not the second rate commercial crap being pawn into the mass markets flooding us with their torturous beats.

Things I hate (not dislike but pschotic disdain for). Telling the plot of a story via the song chosen. (If I wanted to see it I would have bought or sent my birdy to fetch it.)

The series doesn't matter if you can synch a anime as a way to visualize your song that is original and ar...arr...tistic. I could rehash any plot and sub-plot in Inu Yasha in a heart beat (if I am bored), but when you use anime to show the song it shows the personality of the person who synch'd it. Not only that I will call it an "excellent AMV"

Three basic things that are done really well:

Lyric Sync
Rhythm Sync
Great song choice

As long as a video has those three things in my eyes, it will almost always be a good video in my eyes.

It makes a story or has a theme. When you finish watching it you get the thought "Wow, I just had a fun adventure watching that"

That's what I look for.

Sex?
Humor?
Epic Emotions?
Dance?
Sex again?

Well, fun fun uplifting are my primary choice of video.

And don't forget the fanservice of sex! ^_^

Well, for me, the concept is important, but i find that if it has a song i like i'll enjoy it much more, but more than that, i think for an AMV to be really good it has to not only fit the mood of the song but match the pace of it well, like not put really fast paced action with a slow song.

I mean, action with a slow song is good, but the action should be relatively slow as well.

Some sort of emotional link with the song is good too...like, i wont mind if the lyrics dont match very well as long as the emotions in the lyrics and footage are the same.

it's hard to say what makes a good video ...some videos can be nothing impressive but have a song that kicks ass (like mitternacht) and some can have songs that arn't that great but good editing (like technique beat). So it's hard to say. but i'm a big fx and quality fan. beat synch too.

Good:

Videos that completely rewrite characters in new ways, that are internally consistent.
Videos that are really good at telling stories, especially if they are side characters that don't get overly used much.
Videos that are such a perfect match of concept and execution that I can't listen to that same song again without mentally thinking about the video.
A lot of times I find that I like the raw enthusiasm of newbie videos compared to the polished perfection of some established editors.
Videos that are just plain fun and leave me feeling happy.
Videos that are visually stunning, and artistic in imaginative ways.

Examples of good:
Wasteland - Otohiko One of my favorites.
Another Accidental Love Story - Bakadeshi Lighthearted and uses entirely secondary characters to great effect.
Blind Mans tale - Otohiko (again). Inventive and dramatic.
Kyoto Rain - McKeed. One of the first videos I ever saw. It's kind of long, but still fits the mood of the show perfectly.
---------------
Bad: =(

Nasty Hentai videos (lighthearted ones can be fun.. but it's rare)
Videos that give me a seizure and make me feel like my eyes are being scraped by a file over and over.
Videos that are basically a scrambled egg. (stuff tossed together and baked)

Examples of bad:
sorry, you'll have to find out the hard way.
Build a man a fire, and he will be warm for a night. Set a man on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life.
