OK... it's a given that Bleach will be aired in the U.S. at some point... but of the press releases that have been up for months now, none of them referes to a North American release or even an assertain of rights. Wait for a real press release before you get all excited.

Im bad for buying anime impulsivly :P... Like Excel Saga, I went to best buy and bought it. Theres the odd anime ill get fansubbed just because i cant get it here. Being 17 I dont have the ultimate access to the internet and its buying dvd's. Like full metal alchemist, before I bouhgt it I had a few episodes on my comp.

Test it.
Get rid of it.
If good Buy it.

Problem is, is thats an expensive passion 0_o

I've been known to wait to get a series on DVD before watching all of it, but pretty much all of these were out on DVD when I started watching (Excel Saga and Fullmetal Panic among them). But I rarely buy the DVDs without first watching at least 1 episode, be it fansubbed or on TV (AnimeNetwork on Demand is among my favorite things!). I've been known to download fansubs ever after I get the DVDs, because I like to see the differences in the translations. I usually don't mind the lesser video quality of the fansubs; in fact, if it looks pretty good on fansub, I'm usually more eager to see the increased video quality on DVD. Of course, the fansubs of Eva I saw were such poor video quality I got the DVDs just to see what was going on...

This may be slightly off-topic, but speaking of DVD releases, I read some rumors (I think on these forums) that Naruto will start to be released in the summer as a subtitled boxset, but I can't find ANY official release or other evidence confirming that rumor. Anyone else privy to such info?

Yes! Confirmation! And of the second Naruto box set too. This also reminded me to pre-order my Maison Ikkoku set 7. :o

I downloaded episodes of Naruto because i never heard anything for a REALLY long time about it ever being released in the US, and by the time the eps had reached 140+, they FINALLY showed the series on TV. And i wasn't happy with it. They changed a whole lot to make it PG instead of PG13, like taking out the picture of the accidental kiss thing between Naruto and Sasuke (keeping the sound..so then we all know what happened..and it doesn't make much difference then > >), which i thought was one of the funniest scenes in the entire series. They renamed a whole lot of abilities (though the people who worked on the manga did worse.. At least they kept Kage Bushin no Jutsu as Shadow Clone Jutsu (direct translation) instead of in the manga where it's Doppleganger Technique.. > >), pronounced the character's names wierd (except for the voice actor for Sasuke. He got the majority of them correct.), etc.

I usually would choose fansubs over the US releases, but not always, like in the case of Fruits Basket. I prefer the dub over the sub on that one.. > > (Yuki's voice made me wanna cry..)

And i definately get fansubs for series that i know aren't gonna be released, like Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch (they only have plans for the manga to be translated, and last time it was licensed, it was never released because they thought the only way to market it was to put it on a kiddy channel so that it would get more viewings.. > >)

I do have patience though, but like i noticed before, if it's a 2-3 year wait, then i'd give up.. > >

I get both. My problem is that any patience I display will usually get taxed to the limit, simply because of me being in Australia. I started watching Naruto a while back and I've kept track weekly up to the latest episode (176?). The DVDs have just been released in the States right? Add at least another 6 months for the DVDs to get here ... and that's for the first 3 - 5 episodes with another disc every one or two months on average. Yeah, I really don't want to wait for that. (And then pay $30 a disc? I'd have to wait for a cheaper boxset.)

As another example: Full Metal Panic. I actually got into the first series when it got released here on DVD, and loved it. It turned out that the second series (Fumoffu) had just finished airing in Japan so I got the fansubs. Once I got started on those I ended up getting the third season as well. Two weeks ago we finally got the last disc of Fumoffu!

Now, those are for reasonably big shows so we get them fairly quickly. We usually get anime about 6 months after it's been released in America. Oh, and there's practically no anime on TV here so that's not really an option.

So, for me, it's sort of a traditional TV thing. The fansubs are for viewing now and the DVDs, when they get here, are for keeping. The subbed episodes just take the place of what you'd normally watch on TV.
