premeire's a dodo-head!!

Post by Knowname » Thu Mar 23, 2006 10:09 am

*problem solved* but maybe it'll help somebody -_- (or ME! if you can figure out why Xvid won't work)

I was on the brink with Premeire this morning cuz no matter WHAT I did the preview just wouldn't line up with the extracted file! Optimize stills or not, recompress or not, 23 or 29fps, 44, 48 even 96khz, deinterlaced or not, limited data rate or not... the list goes on and on. I finally stopped recompressing it with Xvid and instead used Divx5 (I stoped updateing Divx since it's just spyware...) FINALLY the compressed is the same as the preview. Strangeley, the uncompressed file out of Premeire (I compress with Vdub like any sane person would do) is still off sync. No clue why. oh only way I can watch the uncompressed with sound is by playing the input in Vdub. VLC won't even play it.

Nother concern, Divx is bigger than Xvid... so maybe it's those b-frames or something. Only setting I used in Divx is setting the Qpels to 2 (100%).

no wait, spoke too soon. Xvid works fine, so does the uncompressed. Last thing I changed was the limited data rate, useing the default 3500k.

And this is why you should not use codecs that use temporal compression for your preview files. You really should be using something like MJPEG instead.

And you shouldn't be trying to play uncompressed or losslessly compressed files in your media player and taking the results as an indication of being off-synch... such codecs are not really meant for smooth playback.

I don't ...a-a-a-and I don't. least I don't think I do... well I do I sorta' HAVE to use Xvid when I check to see if the final encode will be right. Along with encodeing the final thing I beleive it's a given.

Think your understanding the situation wrong. EVERYTHING from premeire's default preview on, is off, that does not include preview but DOES include my final (intended) file. But if your saying that one shouldn't use that preview window than I have it wrong, but I don't think you can choose what codec Adobe uses. I don't normally use my uncompressed draft to do anything but recompress in V-DUB (that's Virtualdub for you confused Germans out there).

Thx for the suggestion though, I don't quite understand temporal and nontemporal, but I'll leave that for another day when I can think...

You can definitely choose what codec Premiere uses for the previews. However, if you're using Premiere Pro, then you can only do this when you first create your project; you can't change it mid-project.
What you had said in your first post gave me the impression that you had tried using DivX and XviD as the preview codecs; if that's not the case, I apologize for the misunderstanding.

And you also said you couldn't watch the uncompressed file with sound, so...

just curious, for the codecs, do i have to place them in a special place or so? I just grab K-lite's mega codec pack often and it drops it someplace. can adobe find it?

In all honesty I do both (I use the preview window like normal and when satisfied I export, recompress and double check), sorry I get defensive when put in a corner and it sounded like you were saying I shouldn't double check... like everybody else will not see what I see.

well it IS true that everybody else does NOT see what I see... but that's beside the point... and the purpose of betas

Perhaps what you are saying is because I had used the default premeire pro template it is useing improper settings? That is probably true an I will go for the custom (or new or whatever it says) template next time, but I just wanted to share my findings around this problem. Thankyou.

most codecs put a library file (or dll) into your windows directory, so as long as you are useing windows, not dual booting another copy or version like I just did, or dual booting with Linux etc. you should be fine.

some oddball codecs like LAME and comercial ones set up a directory somewhere (such as C:\Program Files\AMVapp, C:\Audio etc.) and they will cease to work when deleted. It is best just to pay close attention when installing things.

My inclination is, however, that if you have little idea of what I'm saying here and you don't scourge your hard drive like a maniac like I do, you are likeley fine.

Short answer (with K-lite codec pack), yes.
