Kanon 2006

Post by angelx03 » Sat Mar 25, 2006 2:35 pm

You know that romance series based on the PC game by Visual Art's/Key, and that trippy MAD video Vicbond made awhile back? Well according to this little news in the Animate TV website, Kanon is going to have a REMAKE!!!

It's been given that Kyoto Animation (who did a fu***ing gorgeous job on Air TV and FMP: TSR) will be working on this remake, and this time it'll follow closer to the PC game events. It's also given that most of the original seiyuus from Toei's adaptation will reclaim their roles, and most of the staff of Air TV will work on it.

Now see the difference between the two studios:

Here's the website, but it's going to be open in March 27.

Oh wow... is it just me, or is there a fairly big trend now of taking the most popular and best animes of all time and remaking them lately. I'm not entirely complaining; unlike Hollywood remakes, Anime tends to only get better when the shows are remade - they usually follow the manga's storyline more closely then. The increase in animation quality from even ten years ago is apparrent, and I'm really hoping I see some classics remade: Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura, Galaxy Express 999 and Harlock, Kenshin, Dragonball Z, and of course Macross.

Still, I'm glad to see Kanon is getting a redux. Let's hope it's as good as the transition from Ah! My Goddess OVA to Ah! My Goddess TV... or Hellsing TV to Hellsing OVA (drooldrool)
You know what they say: "when life gives you a T-Rex, go ninja-kick it in the head." - Rayne Summers, Least I Could Do
Proud to be a Jenova's Witness - WWSD (What Would Sephiroth Do?)

Awesome news. Kanon has been one of my favorites for a long time now, and I love the revamped character designs. I thought the art in the original was quite nice, but these look pretty nice too. And if they're the same people who did Air TV, I'm sure the animation will be gorgeous. :)

Here's a low resolution teaser trailer:

Depending on your luck, the servers can be slow as hell. But it looks pretty good far, and Yuuchi looks pretty appealing. And there's that lovable AYU!!! >_<

Although I'd love to see some of those series remade/updated, I wouldn't hold my breath considering the sheer length of some of those properties. The closest thing to GE999 is Galaxy Railways. Considering the age of a few of them, and their relative popularity today, I doubt a company will bankroll a new series while re-using old stories.

Many of those old series are pretty long and I doubt a production company would commit to re-doing a series that already had a long run. Ah! My Goddess only had a short OAV series, a theatrical movie, and a spin-off TV series (Mini-Goddess) that was a set of short mini-episodes previous to the current TV series.

I seriously hope Japan doesn't catch Hollywood's remake-itis. I don't need to see the likes of another Planet of the Apes or The Shaggy Dog. :(

Anyway, considering that the company handling this is the same one that did Air, I'm really looking forward to this new Kanon.

It's not out yet, so who knows? It is supposed to follow the PC game more closely so since I've never seen nor played the game, I cannot comment. If the game is "as weird...toward the end" then yes, in not, no. :|

Wow... Good news to hear that. I Like Kanon a lot, and never thought about need for a remake, but since it's the guys who made Air TV I believe thaty can squeeze even more awesomeness from it . :] And since i didn't play the game I will feel some short of freshness in the plot :D

Here are a few more goodies:

Someone by the name of Sushi-Y from that fansub forum translated that interview above:
Q: What was the process that led to the decision to produce this anime?
A: It was mainly because last year, the "AIR" anime that was produced by Kyoto Animation was incredibly well received by the viewers. Along with that flow, we have received many calls from the viewers who wanted the same production company to animate "Kanon", another Key creation, as well. With that as a push, we realized this project.

Q: What was the reaction of KyotoAnimation from hearing this news?
A: Just like during "AIR", they're very excited to go at it. There are a lot of staff members who loved "Kanon" to begin with as well. Since they will be creating this with their own sentiments, I believe this will definately become a good creation.

Q: What are the highlights of this creation for you?
A: Although "AIR" was a story that revolved around one single tale, "Kanon", by nature, is a story that places the attractive points of each character up front. That's why, rather than making the story revolve around a single heroine, we wish to portray all 5 heroines equally. We want to be able to make the fans of each heroine think "that was great" after watching the anime. And so, in order for us to portray 5 individuals properly, we plan to secure slots for 2 cours to make a total of 24 episodes. Since without this much room, we wouldn't be able to portray the character's personalities and their daily lives, which would make it hard for the viewers to feel empathy. Also, we want to avoid something like "Ayu's story until episode X", "Nayuki's story until episode X"...... We do not plan to compose the anime into something like a collection of short stories. We will make it so that episode 1 until 24 will all be connected as 1 whole story.

Q: Will it remain faithful to the original game?

A: The original game is treated very importantly for both Kyoto Animation and the directing team from Key. We will faithfully reproduce all the good points from the game version. Result-wise, even if there's going to be original parts in the anime, they will not ruin the characters. This area was already proven in "AIR", so I don't think there should be any worries.

Q: Finally, please leave a message for the readers.
A: We will make an anime that can be enjoyable not only to the fans of "Kanon", but also to all the people who did not play the game as well. For the readers of G's Magazine who are familiar with the game, we hope you can look forward to seeing just what kind of anime Kyoto Animation will make, out of a wonderful story that doesn't fade away even 6 years after its release.
Wow, it's going to be a 24 episode series, and they're attempting to make the 5 lead girls main characters. Now I'm curious of how they're going to pull this off.
