AnimeFunTV taken off the air

Post by rubyeye » Sun Dec 11, 2005 11:38 pm

I got an email from Ernest (UltraSonic) Zamora, Jr of Anime Fun TV regarding the eventual shutdown of Public Access Television in the local San Antonio, TX area. This will effectively shut down AFTV. You can read all about it on their website.

For those who don't know (or remember), Anime Fun TV is a pioneering cable show dedicated to broadcasting Anime Music Videos on Public Access TV out of San Antonio, TX. They have been in operation for quite a while now and have solicited for AMVs on these forums, resulting with many creators here submitting their work for broadcast on television.

Feel free to email the show about why they shouldn't shut down public access and keep the show alive.

This 'case' sounds like another example of Corporate/Government 'control' over public media.

from my understanding, aftv didn't have licenses to broadcast the copyrighted material (or if they did, how did they pay for them?) i'd imagine including 'the continued illegal broadcast of copyrighted material' in your argument for the continuation of the public access channels wouldn't help much...

nonetheless it is sad to see them potentially lose their show.

If I'm reading it correctly, the entire public access station is being yanked, not just the one show.

Yes, the show, and the entire Public Access is being pulled from the airways, I just have time to reply to this, were busy with local press and getting a speech prepared before Thursday’s city hall meeting concerning this issue.

One of the main issues about this is the contract between the city of San Antonio, and time Warner cable. TWC, has had the contract with the city for over 20 years, now that the contract is due for renewal, the city has yet to reassign with TWC to keep Public access on the air.

The option we are trying to ask city hall is to renew the contract for at least 2006, where during that year, the city can plan for an independent public access station, like most city’s here in Texas already have. If not, the city will basically ‘Back’ the channel until a production studio is made, so that’ll put AFTV’s last show December 29th, on January 1, 2006 the channel will go black.

This puts a real damper on the show; we were just barley getting ready to air Pre-Season 5 until we were just informed just last week about this problem. Not only that, all the new shows for Season 5 were in a hard drive that locked up on us, and had sent out to get it repaired and the files recovered. So even though if they do extend the contract, we still don’t have the shows from Season 5 (we saved pre-season 5’s shows on another hard drive) so were still not out of the woods yet, we are going though some very hard times right now.

All the fans of the show here are supporting us and want the show to keep going, and I thank Rubyeye for bringing this topic to the .Org, I found out by MexicanJunor

Just saw this and figured it would make a good update, in case anyone was worried about AnimeFunTV:

Sorry for the lack of updates, but there been some BIG developments in the weeks so here we go. We have good news from the City of San Antonio, has approved funding for the playback system for public access, so the system will be installed in the weeks ahead, however they will more than likely be only submitting pre-produced tapes (ex. tapes ready to be aired) and were basically all set...

Future of Anime Fun TV

Post by AnimeFunTV » Wed Apr 26, 2006 9:19 pm

This announcement is pretty serious of fans of the show; so I’ll get right to it. As most of you all know our hard drive containing all of our source files and new prototypes of new episodes crashed late last year, just before Oni-Con 2, and the first company I sent to was not able to retrieve any files, so I have had the drive sent back to me, and now its at the hands of a recommended data recovery facility by Western Digital; the turn-around was swift with a complete analysis of what's wrong with the Drive.

In order to repair the drive and begin the recovery of the data will cost an estimated $2,150.00, this is truly expensive. I do not have the money to repair this drive, I told the crew if we cannot afford or even get that data back, it will be THE END of Anime Fun TV; reason why? One of the biggest reasons, is this drive contained almost the entire library of AMV's and Adobe Premiere files needed for the show, including our logo, show templates, and even our DVD Covers for the show, meaning we cannot make anymore DVD's of the show for you enjoy. This also includes limited personal files.
We deeply need everyone's help in this, I am in a total bind to either keep the show going, or just let drop; It will be up to you, the fans, to decide.

Please help us by donating; we honestly need the funds to repair this drive. If not, I have not other choice but to finally hang my hat on this project.

I have the quotation online for everyone to see this is not a joke, but a reality.

The task of getting the old AMV's is not really a problem, just time consuming, however what hurts us the most is the fact that all of our source images such as logos, graphics, and such were all in that drive; It will take much more time and resources to re-do all of the graphic's that were already made for the show, even with our DVD covers, they will have to all be redone. Basically to but it bluntly; The show depends on this drive.
