I've got a noob in training.....

Post by amvwizard » Thu Apr 27, 2006 7:08 pm

Ok like the title says I've got a newbie in training. One of my friends saw one of my amvs and he said he wanted to make one of his own. I said I would help him. I think it would be good to start him off with some program besides WMM. So I was wondering if you guys know of any program besides WMM that would be easy for a noob to use. I also was wondering if you guys could give me some other ideas of things I might need to show him. I'm teaching him about video and audio codecs. I'm showing him some of the best videos on here to show him what makes a good video. So if you guys could help it would be great. He should be making a account up here pretty soon. :D

I think the best thing you could do for him is get him to read and experiment, and not spoon-feed him information and technique.

We have enough problems with people who are used to the latter.

This can be read "leave him alone".

As for what program: whatever he can easily pirate, or buy, or otherwise legally obtain. This usually means "Adobe Premiere Pro".

I mention piracy because it's the first thing people usually do, which is unfortunate, but whatever.

I'm not gonna hold his hand step by step I was just gonna give him some general information and some program and then let him loose. I told him to read the "How To Guides".

First, let him watch a set of anime.

Second, get him an energetic piece of music.

It shouldn't take him too long to start visualizing anime scenes to a particular segment of the music. It's best to get him to write down or describe the scene.

Third, sit him infront of a simple select, drag and drop software video interface.

Now, let him find and match up his thoughts.

Pinnacle is an easy to use editor. It's fairly cheep compaired to Adobe, not as powerfull, but works better than WMM and has quite a few good points. check it out.

The best things to teach are probably:

How to get footage from DVDs.
How to use AviSynth.
How to use VirtualDub/Mod.
How to compress audio and video.

Less important:

Importing and exporting video (will depend on the program used).
Subtitle removal (yes, this applies to non-DL'd footage too, *cough*utena*cough*).
General Do's and Don'ts.

I would just suggest starting him/her off with Premiere. If you can just show him the basics of the timeline, it's actually a very simple program, then the technical stuff can be applied later in the program. But I think just the "A and B" video tracks make it a very simple program to begin editing with.
