I have started like this as well, so I speak out of exp. I personally started with AIST moviedv. Nice program for beginners, though no great fxs. Let him finish a video or two (after letting having him/her seen quite some editing) before you advice him to talk in the forum. This way he will have exp and won't talk that much nonsense (at elast i hope so). Help him a bit editing and very important, show him how to COMPRESS well. These are the main points I would say, oh and of course respect towards others. Take him with you to a con in order to give him new impressions.

its doesn't really matter what program - there all different and the same in many ways so just get him on the best most versitile one you got avaliable.
