True. It's like that even in American things; not often do the sex-fiends or submissive people actually get any. On top of that, it's what everyone else has said (even Misato from Eva said it best): the Japanese tend to be a submissive people; their ideology is to put the needs of others before the needs of one's self.

Totally nothing to do with the discussion, but actually I wouldn't say it's capitalism - it's definitely something older and deeper-rooted in culture than that. I say that because my fellow Russians are, in fact, on the other extreme from the Japanese (that is, more fiercly confrontational and self-referential if not self-centred), and they haven't had a long expereince with capitalism


Hentai, conversely, plays on the 'taboo' mentality. A lot of sexual motives (well, and obviously fetishes) are built around contradicting standard values and transcending moral norms.
