Choral works used in AMVs?

Post by Isenfolme » Thu May 18, 2006 6:05 am

A thought struck me the other day - has anyone ever tried to use choral music within an amv? With all this talk about innovating and so on, it got me wondering if this would be a new thing to try.

Usually people use beats and so on to sync, but what if there were no beats as such, just layers of voices blending together? Anime itself doesn't shy away from using choral stuff as bgm (look at the end of year wall sequence in Haibane Renmei (Ep 12) for example), and although a lot of it is sacred, I don't think that would necessarily preclude its use as material for amvs - again, look at the use of sacred choral music in anime itself.

What does anyone think? For myself, although there is a wealth of choral music that is joined by various instrumentation, I think it would be interesting to use something that was purely vocal - like things by Byrd or Palestrina, or more recently Durufle, especially in something like his Four Motets on Gregorian Themes. On a side note, I'm not really talking about Gregorian Chants themselves, as plainsong doesn't involve the kind of complex blending and harmonies that might make this an interesting experiment.

Just throwing a thought out there.

Personally, I absolutely adore choral music. I would watch an AMV like that in a heartbeat. I'm really not sure how new or innovative it would be - I mean, look at videos using piano music. They don't have any beats to work with either, but rather layers of sound, much like choral music. I'm going to throw out inthesto's The Ocean Above Us as an example here (simply because it's the best one I can think of off the top of my head.)

So, in my opinion, to choral music, even though I don't think it's any more original than any other kind.

Meh. That's what I get for searching on names of composers that I was after (Byrd, Palestrina, Durufle, Victoria...) and utterly forgetting to consider anime OSTs. Ack.

Well, in an effort to recover from my junior school error and actually contribute something useful... Is it true to some extent that those vids all utilise more bombastic pieces? I don't know any of the soundtracks you pointed to, Req, but I know Verdi's Requiem and certainly O Fortuna are all about the bombast. Has there been much done with more contemplative and flowing choral pieces, something where the drama isn't as readily apparent?

And Jen, you're right about piano pieces - you can definitely find a similar kind of layering and flow in piano music.

I have the idea since a while. But I don't want to use any choir - I want to use the choir I'm member in. So I have to be patient until we record a CD. But I'm not sure if I'll take a purely vocal song or one with piano support.
