What are you talking about? A whole ton of old school anime is based in the future. Dirty Pair, Hunter D, Crusher Joe, Big Wars, M.D. Geist... Robots were in back then as mush as or more than they are now.

I think he means CG anime (that clear, rock stable stuff) as opposed to cel. Yeah, I would agree that cel is missed. It's a fucker to clean and compress, but it's part of anime's appeal. You take away the personal touch (that is the hard work that goes into painting the frames, colouring and consistancy check, and replacing with computers) and part of that appeal is lost in my opinion.

Maybe he also means the "emoticon" faces, and stuff like the sweat drop that has been replaced with other weird expressions.

Like the faces with circles instead of eyes when they are in shock? I like that look.

I do miss the older character designs and styles. Best example would be the original Dirty Pair. These girls were drawn with fairly realistic bodies, not overly busty, not rail-thin, and not with impossible-to-duplicate-in-real-life hair, unlike it's remake almost 9 years later - Dirty Pair Flash. Also, Bubblegum Crisis compared to Bubblegum Crisis 2040.

If its one thing old school had going for it, it was the way things blew up. Take an episode of crusher Joe and watch how things blow up. They crumble first into a millions pieces and then blow out as if it were flowing. Things also plowed through walls better back then. More detail was spent on destruction.
Not that I dont like new school. In fact I perfer it. Jut they knew how to detonate stuff back then.

Zero1 is right, the way they do all the new animes with CG now just takes away from..... I dont know, the feeling. Its just not the same.

the one thing i dont really see alot is the post apocalyptic future with the over sized machinery just to get around the streets, and the crappy looking designs for buildings like Dominion Tank Police.
