Ok, I've just watched both shows. The original 6 ep ova, and the new 24 ep series.

I have to say that the original is far better. Why? Well in the original, Keiichi comes to terms with his feelings relatively quickly and acts upon them. In the new series he's still unsure about his actions and motivations right up toward the end.

Skuld: in the original series she's a spoiled and somewhat selfish goddess. Eventually (fairly quickly) she sees that he is a good guy and after he has a fairly mature conversation with her about his feelings and intentions she accepts him grudgingly and gets with the program. In the new series she's utterly selfish and bratty. At one point in the show, Beldandy is actually on the verge of DEATH and she won't let Keiichi help her because she's too selfish to let him near her sister. Throughout the entire show she never really develops.

Urd: She's pretty much the same in both shows in terms of chracter development. If anything, I like her new character a bit more. Although in the new series there is an attempt to highten the drama using her character. Unfortunately, it has nowhere near the impact that the original shows key drama point had, and takes away focus from the main characters.

Belldandy: the artwork in the original show had a bit more personality to it, in this one her head sort of looks like an acorn. In the original show she was fairly naieve but for the new one she is borderline dimwit in her inability to get a clue.

So, if you're wondering whether to watch the original or the new one: I'd say watch the original Ovas, followed by the movie. Then if you still want a fix go ahead and see the new show. I misremembered quite a bit actually. The new show does cover similar territory (like with the race) but does it differently. For example in the original the goddess of luck gives him a kiss and the victory is his, due to his hard work and skills. In the new series she uses magic to hold his funky mobile together while he obliviously races on. I could go on and on... but I figure this aught to do for a simple comparison.

Any disagreements? I know the new show has a lot of fans.. I'd like to hear some counter opinions.

The OVA series has one big plus in that it gets to the point. Boy meets girl, sisters appear to interfere or encourage relationship, boy loses girl, boy gets girl in the end. 5 episodes and a cuter, older style of Kousuke Fujishima's for the character designs. BUT, the final episodes were completely made up for the OVAs and never happened in the manga.

The movie used character designs based on Fujishima's newer work and features some characters from the manga that never appeared in the OVAs. Story-wise, it is pretty stand-alone but it is based on the manga storyline.

The Mini-Goddess series is completely stand alone and can be skipped completely or watched totally by itself. And it's very cute.

The TV series is the most faithful to the manga. Many people have complained that it is very slow-paced and I kind of agree. But I'm glad the creators decided to go this route and make a kind of anime that used to be the type you would see 10 years ago. Plus, you get to see MANY more of the entertaining characters from the manga. Character designs are based on Fujishima's newer style (again), but aside from Belldandy's character which is sometimes very flat-looking, I like it overall. Especially Urd.
