To add on to the distracting part. As anime fans when we see subtitles we have to read them for it is our natural instinct to. As for fansubs as long as you crop out the subtitles they'll be fine to use. However I would only use fansubs of things that have not been released on dvd yet or are very difficult to get a hold of if they are only in Japan.Kalium wrote:For one, ripping programs are free and easy to use.
For another, subs are really distracting.
For a third, usign fansubs will produce a video with sub-par quality because you're transcoding from lossy to lossy.

As evil as it sounds I gave this one guy poor grades for his AMVs because it had subtitles/text and logos . I'm sorry but I have no mercy for such because I'm being taught otherwise. But that's natural because if you're going to be an AMV creator you want to wow other otaku with your idea. With that stuff on screen, like everon just mentioned, it's a big distraction. I say read the "10 Commandments of the AMV" or something related to that name. Then read up on the AMV guide by ErMaC (ask around for that I can't remember off the top of my head). Ask around if any of the other creators can give ya tips and such when you're in a bind. I for one am still in training under someone so my AMVs can turn out well. As for footage, dled is a LAST RESORT. DVD source is the way to go. If you don't have the footage ya need, maybe someone ya know has? Borrow it, rip, and return. Unfortunately I have to pay up for footage I want but it's a price for a goal. Ok, I'm done.

That's not evil at all. I do it to every subtitled vid I download. Subs = 1 when they get enough grades like that, they'll learn their lesson.vegeto247 wrote:As evil as it sounds I gave this one guy poor grades for his AMVs because it had subtitles/text and logos .

No excuse. My first AMV used a series that hadn't been licensed yet (it has been, since), and even though I was a rank newbie I bothered to crop out the subtitles. It was ridiculously easy, honest. There's even a guide dedicated solely to subtitle removal.
Just, no. If you're too lazy to bother with that, you are going to be too lazy to finish a decent AMV. That's not to say you are forced to weep tears of blood for your art every time, but it does take a little time and effort. It's like, well, bothering to get up and dress yourself in the morning.
