There are some series which I would say are completly over rated and deserve none of thier praise but Eva really isn't quite like that. Eva is certainly a title that takes a lot of flak. It is undeniably a land mark series, but it is kind of like the Beatles for me. In that land marks are often mistaken with being the best. Akira to me is in the same boat.
As my own personal list Fooly Cooly certainly rests on top for its rewatchablilty, deep plot, twisting story, awesome music and stunning visuals. Last Exile also gets a nod from me especially on the visual side. Cowboy Bebop for it's involving characters, music and film noir style. Trigun for Vash. Princess Mononoke for being almost everything that a film can be. Love Hina and Ranma1/2 for thier unmistakeable charm although clouded by their individual campiness from time to time. Macross Plus for really being a show that launched me into anime and it's exquisite dog fight scenes. Last but not least Hellsing if not Crispaen Freeman as Alucard's line "It's a nice night" alone.

Whats funny about eva is that you mostly know it for it's fan service, iv'e seen other anime that gives me that same deep thought feeling in there own way, Metropolis, GITS are some examples that can get there point across without needing to show boobs, Hell the FMA Anime even made me think!
