points and problems with Bleach

Post by hypes » Tue Jul 18, 2006 2:59 pm

O.K, so her'es probably overthinking the series a bit, but I'm on episode 61 (first part of show good. After rukia left, bad), and there's a few points I'd like to point out, mainly for discussion.

Point 1: How does the immortal soul die? Where does it go when your in soul society?Does it respawn in Soul Society or does it simply not exist anymore? What use does a soul have for blood and organs? I mean, blood and organs and bones and brains and such keep your physical being alive, but the spirit is you, your consciouss, your etherealness. Why would it need blood? So when everyones running around in Soul Society, why are they bleeding? And if your soul simply stops existing if your soul "dies", wouldn't the characters be terrified of fighting at all? Knowing that in the living world, when you die, you'll still exist in soul form is one thing, but once a soul, knowing that you'd just not exist anymore is another!

Point 2: Soul Society as Heaven and the existance of Hell. We know Hell exists because it appears in the cursed cockatiel episode and eats the serial killer Hollow. Then what are thieves, murderers, and rapists doing in Soul Society (Rukia and or Rengi mention this in their oh so many flashbacks)? What is the scientist captain and Kenpachi doing in Soul Society, as both of them have murdered or tortured thousands of individuals? In fact, what are most of the Death God captains doing there at all? It would seem most of the people in the Court of Pure Souls and/or Rokungai (or whatever its called) should be in Hell.

Point 3: Who are saving the dead from the Hollows during the Save Rukia
campaign? It's estimated that someone dies every 30 seconds in a population exceeding 6 billion (the birth rate is like every ten seconds), of which 50 percent of those dying most likely led a regretful life, turning into hollows, creating about a billion hollows a year (give or take). How do Death Gods keep up? Are there millions of death gods (not likely, due to rigerious testing, as mentioned in those flashback episodes), are death gods rediculously effecient (Not likely either, as Hitamori and Rengis flashbacks show Hollows kicking the crap out of bunches of Death Gods)?

Point 4: Soul Society being feudal Japan. The first time they showed up in Rokungai, I literally laughed. The land of the dead is Fuedal Japan? If its the land of the dead, I doubt it would appeal to one culture (or one time period). It would likely be an idealized form of society, but because the ideal society differs from culture to culture (The Elyssian fields are different from the ships of Hel are different from Heaven, which is different from etc. etc.) Soul Society simply couldnt do that (unless it differed per each persons perception, which is a neat idea, but disproved in the show). Soul Society should then be a completly different and isolated civilization of its own, resembling nothing on Earth, with its own languages, clothing, and laws.

Point 5: Death Gods as sword swinging samurai? Death Gods pretty much equate to the grim reaper(s). this Should be the idealized figure as well. But again, Universal idealism is impossible (the idealized Greecian figure is different from Chinese idealized figure). What did they look like before
fuedal japan? What did they look like when man first appeared on
this planet? Did they appear as early hominids? Should they still
look like early man? Or should they be skeletons, the one universal
trait between civilizations? What did they wield before fuedal Japan? What did they wield before the Iron age (the invention of steel)? If they bothered to catch up to Feudel Japan, shouldn't they keep up with modern times?

Point 6: Where is God? He exists, evidence in the incantations used
in demon magic lines. But What is demon magic? If used be demons, shouldnt it be used by demons in hell? Shouldnt Death gods be using heavenly magic?

Just some thoughts I came up with when watching the show. (the fact that fuedal Japan represented Soul Society bugs me so badly!) DISCUSS!

It's an anime made up of a fictional world, do not look so much into it because there will be loop holes.

Anime is here to please not for us to dissect and try to act smart as we try to figure out the hidden answer

"bitch" is a bit harsh, eh? Ya, I' know I over analyze stuff, as previously mentioned at the beginning of tthe thread. But since the points have been brought up, and this is a forum, I figured it was worthy of discussion. Kinda similar to the colleges that have classes on Harry Potter and all those Star Wars engineering books. So back to point, being let's discuss.

And yes, over thinking can be applied to anything. I didn't like Geneshaft because of the fact they were trying to live in a geneticly modified society supposed to have no emotions but the characters were emoting like crazy. Though Bleach doesn't tkae itself as seriously as Geneshaft tried, it's still bothers to explain how all the spirit attacks and Bankai works, so its serious enough that it should go and double check its plot holes, especially the whole what happens to a spirit when it dies. Anyone else agree?

These are cartoons, for christ sake. They are, for all intents and purposes, artwork with a story. And the lovely thing about anime/cartoons is you can invent whatever world you want with whatever rules you want and are only limited by the talent of your artists/animators. Yes, in this world, most things in anime/cartoons would not be feasible. But that's the beauty of them. Anything you can imagine can be done in an anime/cartoon.

I'd have to agree with the whole "why is Soul Society shown as feudal Japan?" I mean, what the hell? Oh, and of course, we have to have the shinigami as trendy samurai with all these fancy sword techniques that you know everyone who doesn't have a life will be cosplaying as it the next convention.

Oh, but wait, to expect something unique would mean the Japanese would have to come up with ORIGINAL IDEAS!

Is that expecting too much?

What I don't get about Bleach, though, is why Soul Society has been supported for so long without a major revolution? You're dealing with a group of beings that do not hesitate to kill one of their own, but are so dense they can't realize when their own government has been overthrown by a bloody coup!

That kind of organization doesn't even last that long on Earth, so how would it possibly function with all the red tape and paperwork they have to file as depicted in the series?

I have to side with Aizen and the Hollow at this point.
