No, RahXephon did not copy Evangelion, any more than any two movies based on the same story copied each other. The two animes use very different approches to cover the same basic story.

Eva is all about Shinji and his struggle to find self worth and to grow up. This is why the Eva series actually ends with the 26th episode, the End of Evangelion was only created because people wanted a different ending to the human instrumentality project. The Eva units, the angels the other characters are only there to drive Shinji's development. The story is actually told as a flashback in Shinji's mind.

RahXephon is much more about the struggle of the two factions, the Muu and the Humans. The characters are all used to reach the final "tuning" of the world. The script writers didn't copy Eva, they used the same base story to develope their plot.

There are lots of movies that you could pick apart in the same way. There are many anime that you could do the same with. How many magical schoolgirl stories are there?

This is a subject that has been beaten to death, it's always interesting to see someones point of view though. If you ever get a chance, ask Mat Greenfield (owner of ADV films), he is a book of knowlege about Eva and RahXephon.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

Yes, RahXephon shares a lot of similarities with Evangelion. However, even with those similar elements, the focus of RahXephon was different than that of Evangelion, as oldwrench has already pointed out. So saying RahXephon cloned itself from Eva doesn't really follow. And sure, anything will look very similar if you only look at the similarities. How about taking all the differences into account?

You've convinced me, but then I think both shows are vastly overrated and I don't much like either. Except for Rei. But everyone loves Rei.

I'm also somewhat bothered by the use of "The Rei clone" and "The Ritsuko clone" etc., since they are rathered biased ways of referring to people. The idea of the page is to convince readers of the similarities, right? So already stating that they are copies somewhat ruins the point of the investigation and is near disrespectful of the Rahxephon characters.

I'm sorry. At the time, I was too overzealous about the idea of RahXephon copying Evangelion. I'll consider removing those statements.

The director of Rah has even gone on record as saying that Rah owed to Raideen...
Eva was copied more from Densetsu Kyojin Ideon. Not only that, like Evangelion, Ideon also had a movie to tie up the loose ends and finish the series.

I've made a page on my website responding to a lot of the criticism that it's recieved. It should clear up any misunderstandings.
