and now the music!

Post by paulpsomiadis » Sat Jul 29, 2006 8:43 pm

Ookay, I wanted to rip the music from Grandia 3 but had no idea how to do it...

So I learned in a few hours... WHEEE!

HOWTO
======

1. Get MFAudio 1.1.
2. Put your Grandia 3 disc (preferably disc 2 with the ending theme - In the Sky (English version) by MIZ)
3. Fire up Isobuster (or your favorite ISO extracting tool)
4. Browse to the MUSIC folder and extract the GR3_STR.STZ to any foler on your HDD.
5. Now on to Part 2...

PART 2 - Avoiding the crash in MFAudio
=============================

If you try and open the STZ file in MFAudio, it will analyse half of the file, then crash! So...

1. Rename the file to GR3_STR.000
2. Open it in MFAudio and set the options as follows...

RAW - Raw Sound data - Compressed ADPCM
Frequency: 24000
Interleave: 800 [stereo separation for L/R audio]
Offset (bytes): 0 [start playing from point 0 in HEX]
Samples: 16 bit (default)
Channels: 2 (default)

Now, you can preview the Grandia 3 music (and cutscene audio no less) from any point in the whole game by changing the offset.

You can also save parts of it in WAV format by setting that as your output format.

In case anyone is wondering, I'm looking for the English version of the song "In the Sky" by MIZ. It should (maybe) be in here... but more than 500MB of audio data is a LOT to search on my own.

So the more the merrier! Get searching folks!

(alternatively, if someone knows of another program that can analyse .STZ files - without crashing, let me know!)

Note that the Interleave value sometimes varies from 800.

It's MOSTLY 800 all the way through the file, but sometimes it's not.

That's all for now!

Doesn't seem like anyone is bothered though! (except for this forum...)

@sayde - thanks for the info on the video files, time for me to return the favour!

follow up...

Okay people, here are some (VERY) rough MFAudio offsets to get you started...

[offsets with * are just before the start of a song, others are in the middle of a song]

470000* - time for food
4300000 - bakkula
4600000 - dahnas song
7000000 - hexts violin
7200000* - alfinas music box
7600000* - hects violin 2
7800000* - hects violin 3
8000000* - Arcriff temple 1
8400000 - Arcriff temple 2
8600000 - Arcriff temple 3
9400000 - casino cards

SPECIAL OFFSETS
============

10000000 - cut sequences

(this takes you into the cut sequences 'near' the start of the game at the camp fire with Yuki, Alfina and Miranda)

210000000 - the cut sequence where Shmidt tells Yuki about the old plane he used to fly. This cut sequence has a higher sample rate of 48000Hz

!!!IMPORTANT!!!

If anyone has an OLDER version of MFAudio (i.e. 1.0.x version) could you please let me know by posting here or sending me a PM.

It seems version 1.1 of MFAudio has a bug in it that prevents it from analysing .STZ files - which is why v1.1 crashes!

Older versions (pre v1.1) do not have this bug...

I have analyzed .STZ index structure for Grandia 3 and I'm pretty sure I can do the undecoding ripper for all "WAV's" inside. Will try a bit now and report in if I have the script (it'll be in PHP).

Got all the audio tracks from STZ/IDX. If someone breaks in with the sony ADPCM encoding description, it'll be fine :)

YES! MFAudio has command mode. I did it finally.

Do you want me to publish the script? It is written in PHP (you'll need to put PHP.EXE and PHP4TS.DLL in the same dir and execute PHP SCRIPT.PHP to run it), it does require MFAudio to be in the same dir, but it works.

Sure can do!

Strange that the GUI of MFAudio crashes with the STZ file - but the command line mode works...

...ah well at least it was possible one way or another! :P

Thanks in advance! 8-)

I made the ripper for audio. Will make it compiled and publish some time later.

And... one more thing. I assume you DO know about PCSX2 official forums.

I made a *almost perfect* demuxer for Grandia III .MOV videos. It makes an .MPG and .WAV from .MOV, so you can watch the videos in any player that can load external audio (like Light Alloy) WITH SOUND and at full speed WITHOUT occasional glitches which occured if playing MOV without demuxing first.

The demuxer which makes .MPG/.WAV out of .MOVs in Grandia 3 is published in PCSX2 official forum in the corresponding thread.

... and well, contrary to the belief became popular ... the audio IS INCLUDED in Grandia 3 .MOVs, it's just muxed in an uncommon way.

Thought so...

Post by paulpsomiadis » Sun Jul 30, 2006 6:02 pm

Heh, figured that the audio had to be included in the .MOV files.

Which of course means that the song I'm looking for iss in the 'end credits' MOV.

Besides it's pretty obvious that there must be sound there - when demuxing with DGIndex you get a file that is smaller than the original (which would lead anyone with half a mind to think that there's audio in there too...) Also - why the heck would anyone want to store video and audio separately. Makes sense to MUX them together.

Ookay, now I'm off to find the thread with your demuxer for the video files...
