Usually... if I hear a song in an AMV and the AMV is amazing... I won't even bother. The images and song will become linked in my mind.
But sometimes... sometimes I'll see an amazing AMV... but then the song will link up with something else in my mind.
So I guess my point is... I understand the feeling you're trying to get across, but for me at least, it's completely unpredictable.
If you have a concept that hasn't been done before (and I mean concept, not song), go for it--even if it does use Linkin Park. XP
Peace.

I'm always suprised by the fact that over 70% of the time I have to enter the music I am using into the data base. Yep, that's the look on my face alright. Like TKO by Le Tigre or Low by Cracker (Plus many other songs) ...... Anyway, I don't think an AMV can make a song popular, but it can expose a person to new music (and Anime ..... can Dax give a shout out for Kino!)

mexicanjunior beat me to entering the first Christopher Cross song in the database (by only 2 months!). They are still the only 2 listed. Of course, it is old music.
I'm still surprised that some songs still haven't been used in AMVs yet. And some musical artists/groups have zero entries in the database, even though they have been releasing music for many, many years.

I find it to be true, the first FF movie I seen was Destiny or Fate by sycntyred and he/she used the song Right Here by Staind, I have been inlove with the game and the song ever since, but as much as I love the song and would like to use it, I can only think of that video, so therefore I have not, so I think what the first poster here said is true at least to some degree

I like to add that sometimes, people get the perfect combination of anime + song the first time around.
Of course, there are songs that just don't interest me until someone I respect as an editor makes an AMV to it that just wows me.

Originality in the song choice was something I strived for for pretty much all my amvs [with the exception of my latest ;_;]
What I like about doing that is that if someone made a GOOD amv to the song you chose, that's popular, yadda yadda, there's not much reason for me to make my own rendition...
However, I did notice something cool...
I was one of the first [if not THE first] to use Moonlight Shadow *before it became ddr project linked* and Heaven by DJ Sammy + Yanou...
As months to years passed, more and more people made amvs to these songs... [and to my smirk, my vids are still better :p :p ;p]
Getting to an original song is VERY easy with 3 things in mind...
1. It's a song with intangible lyrics, meaning it's HARD to lyric synch the song. J-Pop is a good course to take as in my Together - Soothing Symphonic video... Though some might say "you're not lyric synching" which usually means they're quite shallow and don't know any other way to read an amv...
2. Dance music. Shoot me, I hate DDR, but I love dance amvs and well, they usually have lyrics that match critera 1 and let's face it, look at the categories of vids here at the org and what gets the shaft? Yep, there's fewer dance amvs than any other type...
3. Digisubs.... GAH THE DREADED HORROR! If it's unavailable here, chances are VERY good that nobody's gotten to it yet since digisubs are of horrid quality... [lol, yeah right...] First Boys Be amvs on the org EVAR!!!
Other ideas on originality weigh on, "That song will NEVER work for this anime..." Then someone says stfu and does it and it works...
Making people eat their thoughts and words such as the ones above mark true originality...

I think that it's mainly because most of the "good" editors out there are averse to using a song thats already been used with a popular amv. Its certainly possible for there to be more than 1 great amv to the same song, and I have in fact seen it happen a number of times.
Interestingly (or maybe not), this tends to be much more prevalent over on the Japanese side of the world. Probably more than half of their videos either use music from Beatmania or an anime opening theme, so there tends to be a lot of overlap. Also, the ratio of good creators to crappy editors seems to be much much higher, so that leads to a number of good vids with the same song.

yeah, some videos definately seem to 'lock in' the song as their own. For some, just hearing the song makes me think about the video. "right now somone is reading this title" is like that for me.
Seeing another video to that song would just make me think of that video, probably. Would you make a helsing video using Mitternacht?
This has a tendency to lock out songs, making them somewhat unique, whereas crappy videos don't. Thus, people will continue to use those songs.
Or maybe the better editors just try to stray from the beaten path.

And then you have videos like Noise, which defy everything. The idea is so unoriginal that it's not even funny, but then you watch the video, and it's like... "wow." Now, this is the only video I can think of in relation to that song, even though I've seen so many others. Of course, there are tons of other cases like this, but that one always stood out to me.madbunny wrote:Seeing another video to that song would just make me think of that video, probably. This also surprised me... Been planning a video using Metrocard though, Le Tigre is awsm.JudgeHolden wrote:I'm always suprised by the fact that over 70% of the time I have to enter the music I am using into the data base.
