DVD ripping and AMV creation

Hi, well my first project is going to be using Windows movie maker, but I have a problem. I'm not asking for clips just asking a question here. The computer I'm using doesn't have a DVD player attached to it and so using footage would be tough, so if I got a DVD ripper, would it still be able to identify and rip the files needed. Also:

1. When I do rip them, if I try to open the files in WMM would they identify and open them and put them in the archive or would it just crash the program which would really suck and I'd like to avoid that, thank you. Also, do we need to open the vob files or that huge file which has the entire movie itself?

2. I did buy the DVDs, which gets to the next question, what ripper do you guys recommend. usually it would be DVD Decrypter, but since it's out of business, then there's no point in using it.

If I'm crossing the line at all, please tell me, but so far I mentioned that I'm using the DVDs I just don't know how to convert them to usable fottage. Thaks alot!

WTF you talkin' about boy!!? Ya know it's in the amv amp and rips 95% of DVDs.. just download the amp.. and you're in business.

1.)I don't think WMM can read the original .vob files. You'll have to convert your footage to either .wmv, .avi (most prefferable), or .mpeg1 first. Programs like Virtual dub mod or TMPGEnc can help you out with that.

2.)Use DVD Decrypter. You can still find it on the internet and I think the faq's on this site even have links where you can download it as well.

first, A dvd drive is 28 bucks., or less (16.00).

Second, everything you need from start to finish can be found in the AMVapp. dvd decryptor works on almost everything.

Just try to follow the avtech guide from the first page, and you'll be fine. Once you've done the whole sequence once it gets pretty easy.

usually it would be DVD Decrypter, but since it's out of business, then there's no point in using it.

It's also a part of RipIt4Me, which can deal with copy protection introduced after DVD Decrypter ceased development. RipIt4Me is apparently quite user-friendly and pretty popular on the Doom9 forums, so it's the one I'll use when I finally come across a disc that DVD Decrypter can't handle by itself.

Also, there's nothing stopping the program from working on discs from before 2005 or with weaker copy protection.

By the way, I got a bigger problem Offically I don't have codec. It won't automatically download it and whatever I try downloading doesn't work. (It was on Microsofts main site I think. The reason I mention this is Windows Media Player doesn't really work (with .avi files) and that means that files like TMPGEnc and VD won't really work unless I figure out this problem. Say I rip the file and turn it into a avi, even then trying to opening it might deny me. So is big enough to pay attention to. Maybe someone could enlighten me on dealing with this problem? Thaks alot as well as the advice you gave me before.

So what if you buy an new disk of an old movie. Will new copyright laws prevent me from ripping it?

Okay not yet, still with the governments lastest attept at stopping DVD ripping, even if it is for creative purposes and now the youtube and even here, you can understand why we can worry.
