Apocalyptic Anime
I have a bit of a fetish for Anime that depict the end of the world. Maybe I'm sick. Regardless, I figured I would start up a forum topic to discuss "Apocalyptic Anime" i.e. Neon Genesis, Saikano(She, The Ultimate Weapon), etc.
I'm opening this topic to perceptive inquiries, recommendations, and just about anything else related to then end of the world, as potrayed in anime.

Try posting in the general anime forum instead of general amv. Saikano I hear is some what of a end of the world theme, though I couldn't say for sure. The melancholy of suzumiya haruhi was aiming towards end of the world, though I don't think that's what your looking for.

I think RahXephon,is a better choise than Evangelion for end of the world anime. The story was centered around the end of the world story, not around one hung up character.
Big-O is an interesting eotw anime. In the end it's surprising to find what the world really is.
Lain is another, not apocalyptic in the blood and guts sense, but in a surreal wired sense. Great anime, but hard to understand what's happening.
Blue Gender and Gunparade March, are both end of civilization as we know it animes. Bugs taking over the world, interesting and lots of action.

In case you were wondering WHY anime depicts the end of the world so often, it's because Japan went through a bit of a "Apocaliptic era" after getting nuked during WW2. As for my fav .... Akira, hands down one of the best anime movies (or movies in general) ever made.
After seeing Pwolfs list, i feel like i need to watch anime more these day ...we have so much left to learn from the pwolfer.

The Space Runaway Ideon movies (...they'll be getting subbed soon, patience)
Giant Robo: The Day The Earth Stood Still gets pretty apocalyptic (not so much in the graphic sense, but there is the definite feel of the impending end)
and, in its own way, Paranoia Agent has an odd sort of apocalypse feel in its final episodes (as everything starts growing out of control.)

I noticed that some of the anime listed, such as Trigun and Blue Gender, fall into the category of post apocalyptic anime. Though very good in their own rights, they don't directly depict the apocalypse. I'm looking for anime tend to reach their climax with the end of the world, and portray it in an abstract manner that leaves you thinking. End of Evangelion, X, and Saikano are all prime examples.
Since I've seen a number of the anime listed, and found that a number of them don't quite fit into this context, I was hoping that anyone willing would be so kind as to narrow their lists down to fit within the newly specified boundaries.
On an unrelated note:
**End of Evangelion Spoiler Warning**
The very last scene in End of Evangelion begins with a shot of Shinji straddling Asuka and choking her as she lies, relatively unresponsive, on the beach. After a moment or so of being strangled, she slowly reaches up one hand and gently caresses Shinji's cheek. In response stops choking her. This scene takes place after Shinji makes the decision to live on as they were prior to the Third Impact, AT feilds and all, in spite of the fact that he knows this will allow people to continue to hurt him and he will remain unhappy. Because of this, I have found myself unable to interpret the meaning of that last scene. Whereas I had percieved, in some way, all of the subtleties and psychological facets the movie had to offer in two sittings, the meaning of that scene eludes me to this day. So I was wondering if anyone had any of their own interpretations that they'd be willing to share.
