Ooo, Trinity Blood might work. Definitely mystical, sometimes dark... but if you want a definite plot, it might not be the one for you... it's... confusing and the ending just is... completely off. Or maybe I'm just lost. Yes, that's probably it.

Nobody mentioned Berserk because you're required to watch it before you're allowed to have an a-m-v.org account. Duh. :P

But no, really, I don't know why we all forgot to suggest that one...
Really? Never even heard of it.

the author is dead, that's why the end is incomplete. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity_Blood_(novel)

Night Head Genesis looks interesting.

Berserk had my attention for a while, but the last bit was never animated so it doesn't really get a conclusion unless you read the books. Or so I have heard.

But it just would not be the same. I like books, but if you wait for an epic battle you kinda want blood.

Damn, looks like Trinity Blood is in the same problem. Maybe he has a son that will finish it like Tolkien. Or the way Mozart fans finished his last work.

X and Bleach look bad ass. I just can tell from what I've seen if Bleach is going to be full of goofy side characters. Such characters are nice in things like Love Hina or Tenchi, but when you want bleak and heavy you need the serious gunslinger or samurai that doesn't blink at a bullet shot.

Bleach is basically the respectable oktau's Naruto. Too much comedy, but a good mix of action and the light-hearted stuff so you don't end up sitting in a closet with a rifle at night, going Section 8 on people.

Yeah I just saw Bleach today. Not Bad, but not as cryptic as many vids make it appear.

X still looks good, but I don't know much about it.

Its hard to find something as indepth as Lain or .Hack/Sign with the pace of movies like Snatch or Crank.

Adrenline and Philosophy are hard to mash together. Of course when somebody manages to do it you get things like The Matrix.

Don't bother with the TV series. From the first four episodes that I've seen, it's all very formulaic - something strange happens, Miyu and sidekick investigate, sidekick fights demon, Miyu uses banishing flame thingy and demon is banished. Blegh. Can anyone say Power Rangers? :P

I would instead try Perfect Blue - not strictly adhering to the mystical side of stuff you wanted, but it definitely dark. Psychological thriller that messes with your head and keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. Well worth watching.

However, if you truly want the mystical darkness as well, then I would suggest going for Doomed Megalopolis - very dark, very mystical. I remember watching this when I was a teenager and it was on Channel 4 here in the UK in the mid-90's. Good stuff.

Alternatively, you could just go for something by Go Nagai - the horror anime guru, creator of the Urotsukidoji OVA series, Devil Man, and many others....

Incidentally, has anyone seen Devil Lady yet? Is it any good?

You do realize you're in violation of the rules there. Try reading the rules.
