I think effects utilized in tasteful ways can be done pretty awesomely.

And as of right now, I find myself having just enough free time to work on some of this stuff...as some of you know I've lurked around IRC for like years without doing anything amv related. (and that was because of college) So yea, I finally get to do stuff.

I know I'm gonna get flamed for my use of 3d when I get some of the stuff I'm working on out there. It's taking me a long time to get it how I want it, so hopefully the audience forgets that 3d or effects has anything to do with it and the overall result is "oh wow what an awesome video"

That's my biggest gripe with hollywood these days too...effects and CG are there as a tool to ACCENT THE STORY...not the other way around, yet all the directors play the safe "blockbuster" card and go with retarded CG for no good reason. CG and effects are best used when the viewer doesn't have to think about them.
I don't have to go with the 'standard' but let's face it, AMVing just isn't as fun if you don't get noticed.
I gotta say I agree with this too...there is a certain amount of ego that must be satisfied ;D
Who said you had to meet a "standard" to do something you enjoy? You must not of enjoyed doing it enough to keep at it then.

I can't speak for what Pyle intended with "meeting standards" but at least in my interpretation of it, there is some validity in the reason. Standards may not always mean the editing skill levels one must achieve to make the noticeable videos, it could also incorporate a bunch of other factors, more strongly perhaps is the financial and social side of things.

I've been doing perhaps the hardest engineering degree in all of this country for the past four and half years, and yet in between that I could still churn a video or two now and then, so I don't think I will be quitting anytime soon, but one must consider that it's taking longer and longer to make decent videos these days, flashy effects or not. The thought into original concepts can be very significant as well timewise. So with social sides to people (yes even AMVers have this), having to spend more time on a hobby could be a factor in trying to meet that standard, and one which people may not want to sacrifice.

The financial side of things of course relate to the equipment this sort of hobby requires. After working on the credits to Yuri Collections, I have definitely figured out that working with 3D animation is not something my poor old Intel Centrino notebook computer was not meant to be doing. Well, I could continue using it, but it's just taking so much time to render things. Not only that, sampling better editing programs has also led me to the conclusion that I do need more power, hence I have sort of slowed down in my editing at least until I get a new setup. The standard these days in terms of financial commitments may just be more than what people are prepared again to commit.

It's 3:30 in the morning and right now this makes sense... it probaby won't when I wake up tomorrow

Oooh, wait... I forgot my final point. All of these factors, ultimately may mean that the standard your imagination sets (of course influenced by what you've seen) is not as achievable as you might hope anymore...
