One thing, your sig is WAY too big.
The other thing is, the sea is supposed to be a sea of LCL.
What could humans gain from being one? Well, no one would ever be able to hurt anyone else. If everyone were of one mind and body, there would be absolute understanding. No one would be different, everyone would be of one single, perfect existence; no need to eat, no need to reproduce, no need to do anything like what we do in the real world - just exist. This is known as Instrumentality. The problem with that is, while you are one with everybody, you are also completely alone and without any contact whatsoever, because you are simply your own conscience intertwined with that of everyone else's. On the one hand, you could never be hurt by anyone ever again
Because of that, Shinji gave everyone the choice to reject Instrumentality. Rei said, if you pay attention, that everyone had a chance to return to the way they were, so long as they had the courage to live. The reason that Shinji and Asuka were seen lying on the beach is that they were the first, or at least those most important to the story, whose hearts were strong enough to return as humans.
The other running theory is that because Asuka was in her Eva - notice that Rei did not appear to her when she was presumed to have died - and thus not subject to the Third Impact, much like Shinji. Thus, she never became part of Instrumentality. That's why she and Shinji were both clothed an in the states they were inside of the Evas - of course, this means that Asuka was royally messed up from the fight, but alive.
Regardless, all humans have the ability to return to their original forms again, and MOST will, although some will remain LCL. Again, this is stated if you listen/read carefully. So, Asuka and Rei are NOT Adam and Eve motifs, just the important characters of End of Eva. Shinji and Asuka kept running away from the ugly world they had lived in; but they also understood that the world could be and was beautiful, and that you can't keep running away from the beauty of the world just because of the few instances of ugliness it will present. It was this understanding of both that set them aside from the other characters, and made them each realize that they needed to live in a world with other people, especially each other.

A long time ago, I wrote six vignettes which do, actually, explain Evangelion. ^_^ I'm serious here. Everything you wondered, or didn't know, is explained here; including the probable mechanics of the AT Field, WHY Rei was created in the first place, and just what Rei wanted in the first place.
Linkage to the first chapter:

When you want to go to the next chapter, well, it's pretty self-explanatory.
Each vignette is written in a very different style, of course, from 6 different character's point of view. Fuyutsuki's and Ayanami's should answer your question quite nicely, but it's best to read them all in order.
Oh, wait, I forgot the bit of background NECESSARY to understanding Instrumentality: A particular brand of Christianity (which got stamped on mighty fast back in the second or third century AD, I misremember exactly when) held forth that God was in each of us; each of us had a splinter of the Almighty within us, and when we died that splinter went back to Him and we were reunited.

not to get off topic but instead of creating a new thread for it, since it falls under this general topic I suppose, I would like to get some people's opinons...even start a petiton if need be.
back when the scifi channel did their miniseries on the bermuda triangle they had an article on their site. it was a sort of short biography of the director the that miniseries. in it the article makes mention of "his latest project". now it was a while ago and, trust me, I am looking for the article again so I can't quote it directly but it said he was trying to get the rights to make, get this, a live action AMERICAN evangelion movie based off end of evangelion. my position must seem obvious that I don't want this to come to pass, but what of you?
