Here we go!

Important!
Do not use any other version of this codec besides the one in ffdshow
there are multiple other versions that can screw up your video very badly!
If you have any other versions of this codec i reccomend uninstalling them because they are pretty much useless.

Im too lazy t rip a dvd now so im just gonna use
this music video made by SenshiMamaru

First go in virtualdub and open the video

go to compression and select the ffdshow video codec

When you see the list of codecs select the "MS MPEG V2" (Yeah i said it!)
Important!
For mode select "one pass- quality"
For quality select 99 or 100
Make sure you set Max I frame interval and minumum I frame Interval at 1
That will make every frame a key frame
Like show here

After you set it click okay then save your video with it.
these settings will make large files too but nothing like an uncompressed codec.

You should be able to take that second clip and load it in your video editor without any problems.
A whole episode in this codec would probally be between 1 and 2 GB depending on the quality of the original file
Sometimes it could get larger

You can also load the video through Avisynth.
I haven't tried it but i see alot of people sugest using that method
Those 2 options are your best choice if you can use a lossless codec.

Hey all, i've been having a similar problem - trying to open a naruto ep since i can't find a dvd with some of the later eps on it - problem is - i'm told that Vdub requires a VfW codec to decompress the file. I am a little confused as I've already extracted some of the fansubs. any suggestions?

That means there is a codec you need thats not installed.
Whats the full message it say when you try to open the file?
It usually mentions the codec's name.
You could try installing ffdshow codec that helped another person with a similar problem.

it doesnt give a codec name specifically, here's what i'm seeing:

Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XVID' (unknown).
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DrectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable. Only 'Direct stream copy' is available for this video.

It doesn't give you the name, it gives you the FourCC -- but in this case, the FourCC and the name are the same.

got it! and i'm in business - 20 clips already and counting... by the way - if anyone happens to know where i can get my hands on some DVD's of later Naruto eps, please drop me a line - i can see what you mean about using downloaded footage already just in clipping it from the original files. ah well

I'm not sure what you mean by "later episodes" and CD Japan doesn't actually tell you episode numbers, but the first disc info states that every disc after the first will contain 3 episodes. (which is pretty bad compared to some other series out now). If that's true and they have 4 seasons of 12 discs each, the episode count is around 140+ for the DVDs. Since they're airing the low 200s right now, i'm not sure if that's exactly correct or if they started putting 4 eps/disc after some point. It's a bit suspect for them to be a year and a half out of synch with the series already.

By comparison, I know there are 4 to 5 episodes on a disc for Bleach, and the 15th disc brought you to the end of the Soul society arc. There are 6 more discs out right now since then (one's not actually out until the 22nd, but w/e) so by comparison They're no more than 10 episodes off from the ones that are airing.

I'd try to find the corresponding episode numbers somewhere to see how current they are... I would suspect they changed to a 4 episode/disc format at some point after the first or second year. At the very least they're putting more out on a disc to make people more interested in actually buying the last two years of filler episodes.
