h.264

Post by Bane of Mist » Sun Nov 19, 2006 5:33 am

K, so I saw a sweet video made using the h.264 codec and figured I'd try it out. Where can I get an encoder and what containers can I use it in? Can I use it in premiere?

You're asking the right questions. :) MP4, MKV, and Matroska are preferred; there are ways to get it to work in AVI, but it's not recommended. Don't know if Ogg Media supports it.

No. Or even if you can, it's probably not a good idea for the same reason that using MPEG-4 ASP footage in Adobe Premiere is not a good idea.

MKV = Matroska.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... er_formats

H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is compatible with MPEG-4 (.MP4), Matroska (.MKV), Quicktime (.MOV), 3GP (.3GP), MPEG-2 TS (.TS, possibly .MPG/MPEG), and a few other containers (some by using hacks).

Of these, I'd recommend using MP4 for compatibility or MKV for its features. The rest are mostly useful for specific purposes (3GP for cellphones, etc.), but I'd avoid them for general distribution.
Having trouble playing back videos? I recommend: Image

<a href="http://www.squared5.com/">streamclip</a> can do it for you.
If you want a series to be longer just write fanfiction!(but don't make anyone read it)
