Can't add new clips to my project

Post by Asrai » Thu Nov 30, 2006 9:51 am

Hello

I'm sorry if there's a similar thread. I looked for but couldn't find one.

It's my first time trying to make an AMV. Till now it was going very well.
But all of a sudden I can't add new clips/ scenes to the project.
Every time I try, the Programm just completely close itself.
I'm doing the same as always, the clips are ok and there is no other stuff working in the background.
What's going on and what can I do about it?

Bye, Asrai

Request: Please write in a simple; baby-like-language. I'm not english and technical terms are hard for me to understand

Ok could be several things.

1.) files could be corrupt try re-importing into WMM or remaking the files (how ever it is you created them in the first place.)

2.) you could be have some codecs on your machine that WMM doesn't like, such as the Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP), in which case it needs to be uninstalled before you do any work in WMM.

3.) if you are using footage from several different anime then you need to ensure that the frame rate/files are compatible with WWM more information can be found here Read ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides

4.) you computer isn't powerful enough for really big files (180GB+ is where Autraya and I start to have probelms), RAM, virtual memory etc are the cause of this, reboot computer or upgrade RAM may help in this instance

5.) your english is better than Autraya's it's her first language ^_^ (she's gonna kill me now hehehe)

what file types are you using...?

That's an idea. How can I upgrade RAM?

kinda, but we need more specifics.
what codec are the files encoded with? (divx, xvid, Huffyuv, etc)

you can upgrade your ram by buying more, and then opening your computer case and inserting it into an empty ram slot on your motherboard (if you don't know what I'm talking about you should probably just let a professional do it)

It's probably a codec issue.

My only reason for posting here was to say that someone should make a sticky in every video help forum that says simply: DO NOT EDIT WITH DIVX/XVID-ENCODED CLIPS.

Might save us a lot of trouble.

It just glitches up sometimes, I get it a lot.

What I do is:

Take the clip from the top you want to use, copy it, then go down to the timeline, right click to paste it. It should work and then you can drag again.

Try it.

*raises hand* i have the same problem. mine does it every time i try to add a new clip from the same collection i was working with. does this sound familiar? i'm afraid it might be a limitation of RAM or of the video card i have..

Can anyone tell me if 640 ram sounds like enough to do this kinda stuff? i know it's a bit low but would it be enough to get the job done?

640 what of ram?
I assume you have 640MB of ram (assuming can be deadly)
in which case it should be enough.

most people have either 512MB or 1GB.

and what program are you using?
if it's Windows Movie Maker...then your problem is windows movie maker (a poorly made program. It could also be the codec that your footage is encoded with)
it might be dying its slow, painful an inevitable death

probably, i haven't messed with it in a looong time but that sounds about right.

i am using Windows Movie Maker, i liked the fact that it cut the media up into clips, is that a mistake? should i go for another program? i hear that vegas one is pretty good.
