What is your technique on gathering clips for an amv? I usually just use scenes that would be interesting or motions that would go well with a beat in the music, unless I have a specific idea for the story of it. But, I usually run out of clips by the time I get to the last 30 seconds or so, so the quality usually isn't consistant throughout. A lot of the best vids out there somehow finds a way to get past this problem. 'Tis quite frusterating.
So what do you guys do when you have a problem like this, or prevent a problem like this?

Plan your video a little better while you are editing so that you wont run out. I'm not saying you need to know exactly what you are going to do with every scene in the video, but just go through your song and mark off sections or something. In one section, perhaps you could set aside some specific clips to use, then do the same in another section. This way you can see approximately how much of your footage will work before you go through editing.

In the past I used to run out of material and clips... and well I think it is really just a matter of planing and of time you invest for searching threw all the footage for new clips.
I saw a lot of amvs, where I thought: Man he will run out of footage, but in the end, the editor didn´t because he mangaged to get also not only action clips into the amv and the new clips worked also fine.

I usually search throuhg alot of my songs if I don't have one already. Upload the song in adobe and then all the episode which usually range form 1 -26 episodes. Cut the clips that I remeber to match the music or ebat edit them use effects and so on. Then when i'm loooking for a clip to match that I can't rmeber I skim through episodes till I find what I need also helps because I always can remeber alot of what happens in each episode if I work on a vid no matter how long ago I watched the anime.

Well there is load what can be done to prevent it or get over it.
Firstly as Zarxrax pointed planning.
Second option is just going through your footage over and over again , waiting for a moment you will see some scene fitting in the part you need, and trying it out then.
Also very important is wise usage of footage. For example do not trash one of precious scenes for 3 frames fast beat.
Another good option is animating single frame (like scaling , or changing its position). That saves you a lot of footage.
Lastly you can play with footage speed to get longer shots and eventually have more scenes for later.
