codec packs are usually more trouble than they're worth.
pretty much all the codecs you need are:
divx
xvid
ffdshow
x.264
huffyuv (lossless)
lagarith (lossless)

a fairly short list, easy to find using google

Yes, and it's been this way for the entirety of the time I've been here, and for the year or so I lurked before joining.

I had the same problem, just put a small clip into the middle of what you want to look at and delete it and press play, it really sucks when it starts messing up.

Or you could simply do it right and not use lossy clips.

I was more thinking that the sticky was 4 years of enduring WMM's shit! Not so much an idiots guide.
And it seems that it lays crap on everyone, when I hit most of the roadblocks that keep popping up in this forum, I had no one to help me and hopefully some of the solutions I found through trial error and hitting my PC with a baseball bat and what others have offered up here can help newbie editors.

what do lossy clips have to do with crappy playback?
It has the same problems even with Huffy's.
You see WMM's not picky it just sucks in general.
