A Few Vegas 6.0 Questions (Please Help)

Post by eDiTiX » Sat Jan 06, 2007 5:11 pm

Well, I've encountered a few issues with vegas. This is the first time I've used vegas, especially to make an amv. So if you can please assist me with some of these questions:

1. My preview quality is Preview(auto). my clips are 720x480. However, on many of the clips there is a small tiny little bar gaps on the left and right side of the clip when you look at it in the preview screen. The only way to get rid of it on the preview screen is to Pan/Crop and pull it closer. I mean...does this small thin black bar/line/gap on both sides okay? Its like the clip does not completely fill out the preview screen. My Project Properties btw is:

Field Order: None (Progressive Scan)
Frame Rate: 29.970 (NTSC)
Pixel Aspect: 0.9091 (NTSC DV)
Deinterlace Method: None
Rendering quality is at Best

I use the vdub lagarith deinterlace method to get my clips...

2. I think whats even harder than making an amv is making an amv that I must fix every once in awhile. My problem is that sometimes while moving my clips around or something (as I'm not sure what really causes it) sometimes my clips would stop working. Just one or two clips here and there. I mean if you play them normally, they will continue to work, but when I prerender to watch it more smoothly, some clips will show blank when I watch the prerender on the preview screen. Copy and pasting the clip over again, putting it on a different layer, changing the fx and stuff on it does not work. It seems completely useless until I do it all over again, take the original clip and editing it all over again. THEN it will work...I'm okay working hard on my amv, but I really really hate having to go back and repair it, can someone please tell me whats wrong because I wouldn't...couldn't imagine trying to fix a more complicated amv with clips that have a lot of fx in them...its not always ez to duplicate a clip and put it back in..in replace of one that broke down. I'm using lagarith clips btw.

3. How come when I take a snapshot (btw is bitmap better or png?) its smaller then my other clips but shows like it is the same size in my preview screen. Is there a way to change the settings of the picture to 720x480? I found a way by going to properties of the clip and changing it...but is this okay?

4. I just encountered this problem recently. I finally put my clip on Best(auto) preview mode and one clip does not show up right. Whats with this?

5. I'm trying to imatate a wave/electricity form...anyone knows how to?

6. How do you cut the shape of a person...fill it in with a color...and make the background transparent. I think the only thing I dunno is filling it out with color...like the inside of the person. I just want a cookie cut out of the person...i just dont want the cut out of the person only.

These are just a few questions I have...I guess the rest I'll fiddle around with. But please help....on all the questions please. Thanks.

Wow....people ask the same question over and over without actually look into the forum.

As for the preview problem, I believe it's ur project setting, you are using .9 ratio.

I don't prerender...so I donno about your problem. I love my HD, I need it to last 3 more years.

Snapshot is only avalible in Jpg and Png I thought....

Best(auto)...what kinda computer do you have? My machine wouldn't even play at that setting...

Again...Masking and Wave are manually generated, need time and patience, there is no free ride. (frame by frame work...)

"Wow....people ask the same question over and over without actually look into the forum. "

Well, sometimes I would post a question first and while I wait for someone to answer, I would search a bit. I do that for a few reasons. Sometimes I don't find my answer, so during that whole time I was searching, someone might have given me an answer by then. Another reason is that it is sometimes better to get a direct answer then dig through a whole thread and in many cases...a couple of threads to find it.

"I don't prerender...so I donno about your problem. I love my HD, I need it to last 3 more years"

I didn't know it impacted your HD..?

"Snapshot is only avalible in Jpg and Png I thought.... "

I might be mistaken...maybe it is jpg..forgot.

"Best(auto)...what kinda computer do you have? My machine wouldn't even play at that setting... "

Duo Core 2 E6600 1gb ddr2 800 (couldn't afford another one haha)

"Again...Masking and Wave are manually generated, need time and patience, there is no free ride. (frame by frame work...)"

I heard from a friend that there was probably a plugin of some sorts that you can maybe put into avis..thats why I'm just asking...

Anyhow, if someone else can asist me with the questions again. Thanks

Why are your project settings at 29.97 fps? If it's progressive, you should be editing at 23.97 fps. This won't fix the bar problem, obviously, just something to note...

The bars might be fixed by going to Pan/Crop and changing "Maintain Aspect Ratio" to No. Maybe not, though. If that doesn't work you can always just crop out the black bars after you export the video.
2. I think whats even harder than making an amv is making an amv that I must fix every once in awhile. My problem is that sometimes while moving my clips around or something (as I'm not sure what really causes it) sometimes my clips would stop working. Just one or two clips here and there. You're not editing with DivX/XviD-encoded clips, are you? If not, someone else'll have to help you with this.

Is there a way to change the settings of the picture to 720x480? I found a way by going to properties of the clip and changing it...but is this okay?
Change the preview window settings to Preview/Good/Best (Full) and then take the snapshot.
4. I just encountered this problem recently. I finally put my clip on Best(auto) preview mode and one clip does not show up right. Whats with this?
There's no reason to make the preview window any higher quality than preview. Don't kill your computer trying to preview your video on a high setting.
5. I'm trying to imatate a wave/electricity form...anyone knows how to?
Get creative? Use Photoshop or something to make a lightning waveform and save it as a .png, then change it a little and make another .png, and change it again etc. and import them all into Vegas and put them on the timeline.
6. How do you cut the shape of a person...fill it in with a color...and make the background transparent. I think the only thing I dunno is filling it out with color...like the inside of the person. I just want a cookie cut out of the person...i just dont want the cut out of the person only.
Photoshop? :?

I dunno. a friend told me to match my settings with the clips I'm using. My clips are under the setting of 29 frames per sec NTSC...so I'm just matching it up.

I think I also mentioned that I used Lagarith and not divx and xvid.

Okay I will put it on preview...but I was just wondering why it happens. Especially question #2.

Well...I wanna get creative and do that...but as I posted to a person before this...I was trying to find a plugin of some sorts that would do that so I would get creative...but in a smarter way. I just wanna find a smart way to do it...not a hard way, the hard way is my last resort. As a friend told me there was probably a plugin that did that and I was wondering if there was.

Thanks for the help though...please continue to help me answer and I'll be on my messenger as well. Thanks

As far as the preview problem goes, it might help to know the resolution of your project. However, as sagarajack suggested, try switching the pixel aspect ratio to 1, I suspect that may be your problem. Usually if I have an issue like you're describing it's in the PAR (though in my case it's usually top and bottom, not sides).

Anyway, I think what CrackTheSky was asking is why it's 29.97 FPS progressive scan? Most anime starts as 29.97 FPS interlaced and turns into 23.95 FPS progressive after the interlacing is removed properly via IVTC. Though there are cases where instead of IVTC, you simply de-interlace and get 29.97 FPS progressive scan.

29.9 is perfectly fine...as long as u use prog scan. I prefer 30 fps cuz it doesn't make any difference since u are going prog scan anyway.

For the pluging question...I have almost all of Vegas plugin out there. The most complex one i think is Boris. It offers FX that you can only find in AE but in a lower quality. I think particle Illusion might have similar things you can use, but I think it looks fake...I'm waiting for a Qudro Vid card and my Opteron so I can get reallll CG waves.

I don't think Vegas 6d requires the same aspect ratio for all source....I haven't tested on that yet.

Those thin black bars on the sides (sometimes on the bottom edge, too) are normal. Depends on the source. A Bebop clip I'm looking at now has them. But a Place-Promised clip does not.

you should crop the bars off post editing in avisynth while you're cleaning your video and then resize it. most dvds come with black bars on the sides. like 8 pixels wide.
