An Anime to MST3K

Post by Sephiroth » Wed Dec 20, 2006 7:06 am

Ive decidedto try to do the following idea In the spirit of MST3K to create a rift track since it's something new in the grand sceme of amv creators (and old as far as cons go) so what anime should I choose first. I'm almost tempted to do the escaflowne movie. ALso if anyones interested in joining me in this let me know, i need at least 2 more people to provide voices to make it really in the spirit.

Why not to do the Escalfowne if you feel and you can make it gud AMV :D

Are you talkin' big parody like 'Nescaflowne' or just a shorty with the MST3K group in the front of the screen? Either way I say do some B rate anime like the B rate movies that the gang makes fun of.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 was about a group of robots and a guy on a space station who were forced to watch very old, very bad movies. As they watched, they would add their own comments, sound effects, etc during the movie to enlighten it, and made it extremely funny.

Escaflowne is a very popular series. We all like to laugh at ourselves, just remember to be respectful. You could also go for some series that's been painfully dubbed, like Yu-gi-oh perhaps. etc.
Making an amv, is rather like being the director of a Broadway show, where you have a million dancers and each of them only knows one step.

Sure - sounds good by me. Go for it. Remember to stay in the spirit of the original mst3k, kid-friendly, and don't insult the fans.

BERSERK! is, to me, probably filled with more joke potential than any anime I have ever - EVER - seen. If the outakes alone dont give you ideas of what went through the minds of those VO's, then simply take in the fact that its an anime with ~

men with giant swords

Oddly paired men with swords who ALSO happen to be nekkid in one ep

It has an Chuthulu Ending. No other series can claim that.

Sweet lord, there is so much more to make fun of but my choice is the "My Love For You Is Like A Truck" anime, BERSERK!( ...ER!)

My anime club at college does this to everything we watch. Our secretary writes down the funny ones and puts them in the weekly newsletter and eventually on the Club Tee-Shirt.

Some good ones from "Noein":
- They see this kind of stuff all the time in Japan. "Did you see Godzilla today?" "No, just some guy with lasers."
- The Hobo of Time answers to no one!
- He looks like that Captain Planet lady... Dr. Blight!?
- This reminds me of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure...
- Did his intestines just shoot from his back!?
- If you make a cellphone call from another dimension, is it considered roaming?

We've also developed many running gags. For example, we watched Gankutsuou earlier this year and after the episode where everyone gets the letter for the funeral of Edmond Dantes, whenever an anime character gasps at something unknown, we exclaim "Edmond Dantes!" Also, in true MST3K fashion, we like to add "...of the FUTURE" to a lot of things much like in the classic MST3K episode "Time Chasers". Most importantly, when somebody is doing too many shout-outs, most of which aren't funny, we say "Shut up, I can't hear the subtitles."

One thing I've noticed is that it's nearly impossible to MST a comedy, mostly because it's funny on its own. A serious adult drama on the other hand is always fun. Gankutsuou was a riot.
