Next anime purchase?

Post by dowhatnow » Thu Jan 25, 2007 4:41 am

I've been browsing a few titles (Ah! My Goddess!, Saiyuki, Naruto, GiTS, GiTS:SAC + 2nd GiG, EVA, to name a few), and I'm not sure what I should go with.

Any suggestions for a good anime (preferably boxed sets) to buy?

I'd go in the following order:
Ah my goddess
GitS SAC
Eva
Naruto
Saiyuki (haven't seen)

What if I said inexpensive box sets? As in less than $100?

However, I'm not opposed to suggestions to those that may still cost well above that $100 mark. I'm just trying to be a bargain-savvy otaku.

I would advise Gits, Gits:SAC, and Gits 2nd gig first if you enjoy well animated and brain teaser anime.

Ah! MY goddess if you feel like falling in love or thinking you can fall in love like them.

Eva if you want to think and think and think for days wondering wtf is happening.

Naruto if you like lots of action with lots of filler.

Personally I would buy all the GITS.

Try This Ugly Yet Beautiful World. - Its really romantic and deals with teh mass exticions to a great story idea. Some episodes with violence and nudity. *Not bad though*

[MOD 403: site name removed]

Its really good.

Oh and UFO UltraMaiden Valkyrie.

I would buy Wolf's Rain boxed set i don't know how much it costs but I do know it is a good anime. also Naruto boxed sets come with headbands (some of them) and they are inexpensive ^^

Out of the ones I've seen of those, I'd say Eva. You can get decent deals on that. And if it turns out that you don't like it, someone will probably be happy to buy it from you.

Saiyuki the anime I wouldn't recommend, though I love the manga. The TV series is two-thirds filler. It's still fun and tragic when it has to be, and it doesn't ruin the characters IMO, but it's still a long slog with bad animation. That one can also be had pretty cheaply if you look for the Double Barrel rereleases - I got a set bit by bit at Best Buy, who had them for $12 each. $60 is pretty good for a 52-episode series.

If you're a cheapskate long-term, I'd advocate pitching a lesser-used email address onto some mailing lists at distributors' websites. Just don't get into the trap of buying whatever's cheap, even if you're not totally into it. :P
