Anime club

Post by PandaBubba » Fri Jan 26, 2007 11:54 pm

Has anyone started or recently joined an anime club? My school is trying to start one, but we are in desperate need of guidance.

Be this club for a highschool or college?

Methinks ye be needing to see your school's pricipal/dean of whatever to officially become a club. Get a club room, discuss a club budget, get closet space for DVDs, manga and the like, discuss the purpose of the club, what activities the club will participate in, get people to join, show anime that has not been on Cartoon Network, assign a Pres, VP, Treasurer, and Secretary, etc, etc, etc, etc.

That pretty much it. If they'll let you have your club, you're going to have to go by what your school tells you. As far the ETCs go, talk to your principal and or guidance counselor or whoever about what else you may or may not have to do. They can help you out a lot better than I can.

They'd better let me make one. I got turned down last year because it was just me and my sponser teacher. But I've been gathering a small army (It consists of about twenty or so people.) and we're making a list of nessessities vs. desires. So far, nessessities are winning.

We've created an anime club way back in my high school days. Here's the general necessities to get an official school club.

1. Get a sponsor. No matter what club, you'll need a faculty member of the school to sponsor you as the "responsible adult". In case all hell breaks loose, they need to put the blame on someone, and since students are under 18, and under the guidance of the school, they can't be held responsible, hence why they want an adult.

2. Do NOT make it an anime club, this will not pass through the approval phase. You need to make the club EDUCATIONAL for it to be accepted as a high school club. In high school, our club was called "Japanese Culture Club", with meetings every other Wednesday, and an anime showing once a month on a Saturday. We even started a yearly non-school sponsored (since there weren't any adults on the trip) anime convention trip (always planned it the previous school year, and then went in October of the following school year).

3. If you can provide a syllabus of scheduled meeting times for the rest of the entire semester, and information on what you will be talking about at each meeting, it will provide you more leverage of being an official club.

What you should be talking about at each meeting are educational informational stuff about Japan (NOT mainly anime), such as teaching the club members about how a girl talks about herself (atashi wa...) verses how a guy talks about himself (watashi wa...), or stuff like how Japanese people are extremely polite and very quiet (and how anime is a poor representation of real Japanese etiquette).

4. Remember to use lots of school-approved advertising for the club has been finalized. Remember to think of a creative name of the club, NOT "Anime Club" or anything with the word "anime" in it, it should be called something like "Japan Club" or something more formal, like "Japanese Education Society" or JES for short.

--------

Anyways, it still depends on the school on how strict the policies are, but if you follow this outline, it should probably be a sure bet that you'll get the club approved.
:D

Good luck, and keep us updated on how it goes.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, stick to viewing fansubs if you can. Back in my day, all fansubs were on VHS tapes, so it was a bit easier to do, and do not view fansubs that have been licensed.

If you would really, really, really want to view a licensed anime that you already have, then here's the steps to follow...

1. Contact the distribution company, like ADV, Bandai, and RightStuf.

2. Explain to the company that you are an official club and would like to view some of their materials for the club.

RightStuf already has this information posted on their site in case you need help....

PS. I also forgot to mention, that having a small club fee can help with the provisions throughout the semester. I think we had a $5 yearly club fee from each member, and that helped out with getting drinks and chips and some Japanese goodies for the rest of the year.

Thank you Psygnius! Last night I google searched "anime clubs" and I found a list for animes parents had approved of for kids ages 5-17. Obviously, we won't be watching the 5-12 stuff unless it's specifically asked for, but I think that'd be a good thing to present to the big man.

I like Psygnius's suggestions for a club name: Japan/Japanese Culture/Education Club/Society. It reminds me of this club name: 'The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture'. :D

Other topics to discuss: Japanese food, language, music, the differences between Japanese vs. U.S. school systems , traditional clothing (in one of my H.S. Japanese classes we had a demonstration of kimono dressing), etc. And their impact on Western culture. You could even incorporate anime into some of these subjects: food = Yakitate!! Japan, music = Nana or BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad, school = AzuDai or practically any anime that deals with moving up grades and exams.

These are all great, but does anyone have any examples of rules that their anime club had? That's what we need to set up next.
