The anniversary edition of The Last Unicorn is in the stores this week.
Princess Nine should work. And maybe Oh My Goddess.
Save $$ with some of older classics: Nadia, Tenchi Muyo, Phantom Quest, Moldiver, Vision of Escaflowne TV, Saber Marionette J, Outlaw Star, You're Under Arrest!, Magic Knight Rayearth, APC Cat Girl Nuku Nuku, Saint Tail.
Or even older: Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion.

Actually, I have the original VHS release of Last Unicorn
That big tree that Smendrick tinkers with always freaked me out a little. Did you know that a live action version was in the works for a while?
Okay, thanks for all the suggestions! I figured that I'd start with Kaleido Star and Angelic Layer (they seem to be fairly cheap).
Oh, one more thing! How about "The Adventures of Mini-Goddess"? I saw the NGE spoof episode a while ago and forgot about it until last night. I remember laughing my head off. Is this appropriate for the little 'uns?

Why is my sig messed up on this thread? It looked fine on the SOAD2 thread.
(The 3rd line is supposed to be in the 2nd line creating a 600x40 line of sig.) Anyway, Sounds like you have a good start there. Not sure about mini-goddess. OMG! The Last Unicorn. I haven't seen that since I was a kid!
Well, have fun with that! ![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

Well, I guess you can argue about that... depends on what definition you're using. But given that it was drawn by a lot of the Ghibli animators just before they became Ghibli, I've always considered it anime, or at least a formative work in Ghibli's development.aerialesque wrote:Is The Last Unicorn actually considered anime? But, yes, great movie.

It's been a while, but I figured I'd give an update (to everyone who gave suggestions) as well as my take on the shows in case anyone else wants to know. Bear in mind that I bought these series with no prior experience with them except AMVs on this site.
Kaleido Star - Fantastic series! It was funny without spoiling poignant moments with slapstick humor (always a bonus in my opinion, unless that's what you're looking for in the first place). I think the production staff got together and assembled every known method of destroying an aspiring young star in order to move the plot along but Sora never lets anything keep her down. Quick synopsis: Sora's childhood dream is to join the Kaleido Stage and a pint sized spirit by the name of Fool (who is also an unrepentant lech) tries to guide her to become the star of it.
DNAngel - Good series. Funny, romantic, and adventurous - The basic plot is that a young boy contends with a family curse that turns him into a magic thief whenever confronted with images or thoughts of his true love. The curse is not just for laughs, though, as it is the family's duty to steal and exorcize cursed artifacts from all over the city. Jolly good fun.
Angelic Layer - Great series! The story centers around a young girl who learns about a fighting game (called Angelic Layer and acted out by robotic dolls on a VR platform) and is practically forced into the national competition for it. The series is funny but also has a great deal of emotional content ranging from simple childish dates to familial obligations.
Kaleido Star was definately MY favorite of the three, but the other 2 seemed to appeal more to the young 'uns. DNAngel was good but not quite my thing, there's a rather scary creature at the end of the series that I thought might upset my littlest sister but she didn't even blink at it. Angelic Layer came in second for me but I have a soft spot in my heart for fighting games (ah, the days of yesteryore when Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Mortal Kombat, and Samurai Showdown ruled the arcades...) One other thing to note, I watch all my anime in Japanese with subtitles. I HATE most English dubs (With the exceptions of Cowboy Bebop and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, neither of which I would show to kids) so I can't review the dubs of these series. There are minor spelling errors in the subtitles in all three series.
