Lupin The Third, Castle of Cagliostro(Movie)

Post by gokenshadow » Wed Jan 31, 2007 1:45 am

Has anyone seen it? It's a pretty cool movie. It was one of Hayao Miyazaki's first films. It has a pretty good story and it also has some funny moments. I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen it. And if so, what they think about it. :D

In a lot of ways, I like this movie more than a lot of Miyazaki's later works. It's got his stamp all over the place with the flying machine, the almost ridiculous amount of physical action, the prototypical bad guy bent on acquiring power (who re-appears in a later film, Castle in the Sky, essentially unchanged), and of course the art style.

I'm kinda disappointed that the re-mastered release that Manga Entertainment put out last year had the fabulous animated opening sequence replaced with stills per the request of the Japanese owners. It's the main reason that I haven't replaced my old letterboxed DVD copy with the shinier anamorphic DVD re-release. I almost caved in during the last RightStuf Manga Ent. sale.

It's unfortunate that Lupin III isn't more popular in the U.S. Old animation aside, the franchise is some of the most fun stuff to watch.

I liked it as well, and like Willen I kind of prefer it to his later films. It has more humour to it than most, if not all, of his Studio Ghibli work, and it's a very fun watch.

If nothing else I'd watch this movie for the audio. The music is good, but I love the old sound effects.

Isn't the American version have Lupin voice by David Hayter? I think I read that somewhere. I've only seen the subbed version :(

I just finished watching it for the first time about a half hour ago, and loved every minute of it!

Just to save space on the forums; has anyone else had a playback issue with their copy? I had a scene towards the end of the movie that turned up interlaced when I was watching it. Is this a manfacturing error on all the DVDs or did I just pick up a bad copy?

Another vote for this as one of Miyazaki's best. I bought the movie kind of on impulse a few year's back (for a bare bones release, Manga actually did a good job with this one.)

To this day it's probably one of the most watched movies in my collection.
Great cast (...as to be expected with a Lupin movie, really), soundtrack, as has been pointed out, works very well, some GREAT action (still love the car chase in the beginning,) and overall the story works...both as a Lupin caper and a Miyazaki adventure.

Kind of a shame to hear that too @ the opening being changed.
(...that settles it, keeping my Manga copy.)
