O.o you would be suprised at some of the videos ive seen made in 8 hours..

but yea, i know what you mean, ive been in a kind of a rut lately (i think its just winter gloom, when summer comes again, maybe ill start editing again...) i have a project that ive been working on for a long time (or not working on) and i cant seem to get the energy to work on it... so instead i make some random other amvs in the meantime to pass the time O.o

maybe making a few random shorts might help? (nothing to upload but stuff for personal experimentation)

i know some people suggest that when you get in a rut to get out of the house and exorsize...

ive also heard that you should listen to all your songs and find one thats so awesome that you HAVE to make a video to it... helps...

i donno i just usually wait around for inspiration O.o

Same here. And I've done it a few times too.
Here is one example of something I started but just abandoned. This clip is all that exists of the project now:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=rJgf4KQKCog

It's missing a LOT of stuff but you get the idea. And every time I start on something like that and end up stopping work on it, it becomes that much harder to start the next one.
I'm not one for competition to be honest. Most of the time I'll send a finished video to a con, but only after the fact. And actually it's when I do that (submit just for the hell of it) that I'll win something.

the hardest part of making an amv for me is actually getting it started (collecting all the material and actually opening the editing program). The actual editing part is really fun for me, especially when i have a clear concept, and i'll spend hour upon hour just glued to the screen.
After i finished the editing my next slump is cleaning it up, i have a hatred for avisynth because of some frustrating experiences when i first tried to use it so i tend to put off the finishing touches.

But my biggest inhibitor to making amvs is probably the gathering of material and the searching of scenes through tons of eps to get the best ones. and if i dont have a really inspiring idea i dont bother making amvs at all as there's no point.

You pretty much hit it right on the head there. And I'd make a wadger that most editors are like that too. I think the peopel who are outh ther emaking video after video, or doing these big complex priductions have to, in some way, be forcing themselves to do the work. Or perhaps they are just REALLY into the competing aspect.

i think this is more for when youre in the middle of a project O.o

my last video, i took a day off cause i was getting sick of looking at the timeline, and it helped (granted, i was almost done, and all i needed to finish was a bit of tweaking here and there) i know that ill just get really uncomfortable sitting in a chair for long periods of time and so exorsizing helps me...
~~~~~~~~~~
as for competition, im not one for it either, i set my own "bars" and if i enter a contest its "for the hell of it" as well O.o
~~~~~~~~~~

the best i can say is that this is a hobby its supposed to be fun, if its not fun anymore stop doing it... i mean no one is forcing you to do videos... just wait till the inspiration hits... write down your ideas in the meantime. there will be people around when you come back, dont stress it.

Actually there is something to that, but it does not relate to AMV's so I won't go into it.

I'll have to sit down and systematically go through and identify the things causing the problems.
Mind you I LOVE working on short projects. Most recently I did a Miami Vice trailer using Ghost in the Shell. That entire thing was fun to do, and it's the single thing I made that I absolutely love! Everything else I've done I've had some sort of issue with afterwards, but not this.

Oh well, I've wasted enough time asking "why" for today... time to go do some work.
