Otakon Question

Post by SailorAstera » Fri Feb 16, 2007 9:15 am

Hey everyone, I am really new to this AMV thing. Actually, I am also really new to this convention thing too. Otakon 07 will be my first anime convention ever.

I am curious, can anyone enter the AMV competition?
I know they haven't posted the info on the site yet, but I figure you guys probably know more about this stuff. I don't think my video is like *ZOMG* amazing, but I think it would be cool if people got to see it at an event like that. Assuming it made it through whatever cuts occur. Which it might not. ^^;

Anyway, just kind of curious as to what the submission process is like, etc. Thanks for reading.

i believe as any con (i havent entered otakon myself though) that anyone can enter, but weather or not you make it into the contest itelf is another question entirely...

from the other cons ive entered it pretty much goes like this:

you enter the con, wait around for them to post the finalists...

if you get in you post in the thread wishing other people luck,

if you dont get in you post in the thread wishing other people luck (while behind their backs bitching about how the con is fucked up and how your video really should have made it in the con O: haha)

then either go to the con and wait for the results, or dont go to the con and wait for the results to be posted 3 days later online...

Aww... cynical Jadd is funny...

Anyway, for the most part that's quite what you'd expect from entering competitions anyway. Otakon from what I've heard has had a bit of issues in the past, and it's a bit unpredictable, however standard ways of entering still apply I believe. At the end of the day it's about giving it a go ;)

Even if you don't make the contest, assuming your entry is PG and "safe," they will show it at least once in the overflow room. This room is actually as large as most reasonable sized con's AMV contests and generally 100 - 200 folks are in there at any given time, but yeah, give it a go. No real reason not to.

<--- AtomX posting on Koop's computer

To shed a little bit of light on Otakon specifically, yes, anybody can enter, provided the video meets the specified rules (usually there's a length limit, a PG rating [might be PG-13. Just no nudity or ultra-violence. They'll specify in the rules], and sometimes a requirement that it can't have already won an award at another con before the Otakon submission deadline). All of the eligible videos then get compiled into a pre-screening where panels of judges meet and watch each video and rate each one, and then the top 5-7 (depending on the category and number of submissions) go onto the finals. The videos that are shown during the actual "AMV Contest Showing" at Otakon are these finalists, and the audience votes on their favorite from each category. And like dwchang said, even if it doesn't make the finals, they do have Overflow Showings where they show each of the non-finalist videos.

Thanks everyone, this is great info. They haven't yet posted the info on the page. It's still a ways off. But information will be here: http://www.otakon.com/events_amv.asp

Eventually.

Do you guys know what kind of format they usually accept the videos in? Is it electronic submission or do people mail in DVDs?

I have only made 4 music videos and only two used anime. I am really proud of the two anime ones, but I made them with Windows Movie Maker and I don't know lots of effects and stuff. But, like you said, it's worth entering. I'm pretty used to rejection letters now, so my life would go on if I didn't get in. Hehe

The only year they had FTP submission available was 2004. Usually you just mail in a data CD or DVD (NOT an authored DVD that you can play back in a DVD player) with the file on it.

Personal anecdote: I sent a video in in my first year of making them, figuring I had nothing to lose, and it actually got into the finals.*

* Where it was promptly ruined by the horrible sound setup in Video 1 ("the hangar"), but hey, that's what you get for making a video that relies on the lyrics and uses a song nobody knows.

Hey everyone, sorry it's taken me this long to address this. I've been busy building a new computer and as such have not been on line the past few days.

First I'd like to apologize for the rules taking so long to get to everyone. The Rules and Submission Form have actually been ready to go since January 2nd, however were held up awaiting legal approval, and then most recently delayed by the Otakon website server change (which is currently in progress).
To anyone unaware, I had made the rules and submission form available to all subscribers of the Otakon AMV mailing list several weeks ago (right after everything was approved by our lawyer). For anyone not currently a member, you may sign up and access the files at the mailing list website here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OtakonAMV/
Also this past Monday I was informed by our webmaster that the server move is nearing completion, so the rules and submission form should be available at Otakon's website very soon. I will be making an announcement here on the org, on Otakon's BBS, and also to the Otakon AMV Mailing list once everything is up on the website.

To address the question of "how to submit" we currently are only accepting hard copy submissions (ie: sending us your DVD or CD with the video file), however I'd like it to be know that I am working with our website administrator to see about the possibility of having space set aside to be used for FTP submissions. The rules cover all this in much greater detail.
